if you're looking for powerhouses, skip 'm, if you just want a regular business laptop they're not too bad
ugly heavy slow etc. yes, but still
take one with an xga screen (the larger screen type) and spoil yourself, buy that spare battery pack, the one that goes into the cd rom slot

For my new laptop I'm looking for something relatively slim so that I can administer some fiber-optic switches "on the go"

Well, then, $550 but you pay me the shipment, lazy boy, among with a six pack of beer (must arive cool, if they are hot, you'll be in trouble). You'll have to find out how to make them arrive cool though... Let the force be with you (although not HP's force, it's way too weak).
Okay. I'm ah... not sure how to respond to that one.

Oh so you're very religious?

I would go with DELL, as you can make your own PC with clicks...
And they have good processors to serve.

I'm not religious at all. But I don't see how that has anything to do with your previous comment. Your comments seem cryptic quite often. It may be a language barrier situation, with regards to your humor not translating the way you mean for it to be.
Anyway, my offer stands. I'll give $550 and I'll pay the shipping of the laptop, which I put forth a sum of what... $35.
As far as the type of laptop? To me it's what's inside, what did they install in the "box". Did they go with RAM that's not even being tested or are they loading up on some Kingston. Did they pack all sorts of software with backend running services that slow the heck out of the computer and make startups crazily slow.
Those are things I look at and recommend others look at more than just a name.
I recently spent several years building desktop computers, that's from the point of purchasing parts to taking payment from the end-user (aka. customer). And then working with them if a problem should arise, or a request after the sale was put forth, etc. etc.
FWIW.
(that was very theraputic)
