@Fred: This is the quote in the PureBasic manual that Shannara is concerned about.... it seems a bit abiguous.
Order

PureBasic is a low cost programming language. In buying PureBasic you will ensure that development will go further and faster. For personal use (ie: not used by a commercial organization) the updates are unlimited, unlike most other software out there. This means than when you buy PureBasic you will get all future updates for free, on the web site. Better still, you get the three versions of PureBasic (Amiga, Linux and Windows) for the same price ! For ease of ordering, you can safely use our secure online method. Thanks a lot for your support !
HTH,
blueb

PS - Concerning Paul Turley and IBasic.

If I was Tom Hanlin (the new owner of Pyxia), I'd be absolutely upset that the person I sold the business to, has set up shop to become my competitor. Just my opinion.

Tom bought it, he didn't sell it. I do find it odd that the official "paks" for IBasic Pro will be able to be used with the new language.

Could you quote the license part where professionals doesn't get free update ?
@Fred: I was a bit concerned by Shannara's post as well, so I did a bit of searching and found this line on the ordering page:
For personal use (ie: not used by a commercial organization) the updates are unlimited, unlike most other software out there.
While this is not the license, it does seem to imply that the rules are different for commercial users of PureBasic. Would you care to comment?
Netmaestro already quoted it :)

I would probably be really mad, too, if I were him. But if I could recommend a few things to Tom they would be for him to take more of an active role in the community and to promote IBasic more. He's been gone up to 1 month at time. He's got to show the community that there's a future for IBasic and show some sort of road map. At this point it seems like a dead language. I hate to be harsh esp. since the poor guy payed so much money for Pyxia. The truth is I really don't want to see the guy lose out so much. I wish the best for him and hope he can start exciting the community.

Seems to me the buyers activity levels have no bearing on the sellers morality levels.

Just some quick info, this is what Paul feels about discussing other languages at the Pyxia forums:
#6 This is an IBasic and Pyxia Development support forum. Please don't post advertisements or technical questions
about other languages. Advertisements include links to other languages that are either competitors to our products
or commercial in nature.
That's probably why I have a difficulty with threads like this. In this case he is given an advantage he won't allow other
players, like Purebasic.

Another little thing about the license quote: when i read that, it seems like if i program software for companies or for selling online as shareware, im not allowed to have free updates!

I see. However there is still no distinction between companies and particulars, so i will remove this quote, thanks for pointing it out !

Fearing other languages isn't a very good reason to block discussion. I, like many others I expect, program in multiple languages. I really enjoy programming Purebasic, but there are cases when I can accomplish something I need faster or more elegantly in a different language. A programmers toolkit shouldn't consist of a single tool (or language in thing case) in my opinion.

The other difference is that Purebasic is an extremely good language and compares very favourably to most everything else. Perhaps IBasic/Paul didn't feel their product was strong enough to stand up under comparisons?

If there is something that another language is able to do better, it is good for all of us to discuss it. If there are true failings to Purebasic, it is better to identify them so that Fred can think about it and add it to Purebasic.

Just my opinion anyhow. :D

Well, unfortunately, my posts have been viewed as "advertisement". It wasn't my intention but I see both sides of the issue. On one hand people shouldn't be coming on here and leading propestive customers to another language (I wasn't trying to do that) but at the same time many of us discussed the selling of Pyxia at the time it was being sold (in the Off Topic section here) and I thought many might interested in this news.

That's about it. That's all I gotta say about any other language on this forum. Fred has every right to set those rules down and I'll respect them.

Were they viewed as an advertisement by Fred? (edit - whoops, maybe they were.)

I appreciated the information and the opportunity to:

check out the "new" language" and
see what Paul was up to.

Since Fred never charges us again after our initial purchase, he probably isn't too concerned about this type of discussion???

IMO we've had "bltz" discussions that came much closer to being "advertisements" than this one, and Fred didn't seem to mind??

My feeling - thanks for the "information" - it's nice to be aware of what's going on. haven't been around long enough to figure out why there seemed to be so much "hostility" regarding Paul and the new language.

cheers

Hope that remark was meant for paul? Anyways, I don't fear other languages of course, but it's not considered good business
practise to link people off to competing products from your own site!

That said, I don't have any problems with the relaxed style over here concerning this. Just my opinion, nothing else.

To be honest, If paul allowed 'ad's' on his site, and someone linked me to this place, I wouldn't have wasted so much time over
there as I have done already. :)

You can mention it on any site except one  Don't want to rock the boat over there too much.
paul's answer to a question at his new forums. Now what on earth does he mean by that. ?

Implies something to hide. And suggests the people over there are aware that this is not a nice thing to do either.

I wonder if new owner of iBasic has this legally covered (most sales of this nature have some clause preventing this).

If so, I wonder if the new owner will nail him. And if so, now - or later, when some more damage is done, customers stolen, and perhaps greater penalties can be extracted.

Also wonder if those people pushing/abetting this can be nailed as well.

Interesting.

As to the old owner there is a saying:

If it looks like a crow, sounds like a crow and flies with the crows ...

I never said to not talk about other langages (check the forums history, i never censured any messages), that's just than 2 posts in a row which are talking about other langages from the same user. I just warned, nothing more, to not have the off-topic section being a reference to competiting products.
