Dwarfed by Android now though.
The latest figures on the wiki page I linked to are 2014, it's likely the gap between Android and everything else has widened even further in 2015.

I'm talking about desktop operating systems. You're referring to mobile devices. :)

No, I was referring to all devices  If I were just talking about mobile devices Window's market share would probably be less than the margin of error. On mobile devices Android currently outsells Windows by around 40 to 1.

For me Windows is all but history. I've swapped my main dev machine from an HP running win10 to an iMac, my tablet from a surface to an iPad Air 2 and I'm just amazed at how much easier everything is in the Mac ecosystem. It all just works and any growing pains I've had getting used to it arose from my assumption that [task goes here] would be a lot more complicated than it actually turned out to be. Perfect case in point: I needed to put a basic index.html with a few words on my websites explaining that they were down and I used MS Word for Mac to write it and save it as a web page. It should have been around 400 bytes, Word spit out 80K of gibberish Asian characters. Could I have solved this? Sure I could, I've done such many times over the years. But the point is, I shouldn't have to. I solved it this time by pasting the message into the OSX Pages app and saving as html, all of which took less than a minute and yielded a perfect result.

Remember, those of us who were around back in the day know all too well that most of MS's success and accolades was the result of bullying and outright theft. It will be nothing more or less than karma coming back around when those campuses get mothballed. Good riddance. Ballmer was right out of his tree anyway. (for those with not much english: read 'crazy')

Take a look at what Microsoft is working on these days:

W. T. F. I remember when they used to work on realistic flight sims.

Not that easy to end a nearly forty-year love affair; from the very first time I laid eyes on those green letters instructing me to enter the current date and time, I'd been smitten.

Sure, OSX is great, and in many ways, Linux too. But difficult as it may sometimes be, Windows is still more flexible; especially as a programmer's platform. And as programmers, it's a base we just can't afford to ignore.

Nevertheless, let's not fool ourselves into believing that Jobs was a gentleman.

That's why I stick to win7, which I never upgrade, because I never make a connection with internet. So, my win7 workspace is clean and very fast for many years already. I install only trusted applications, like PB en OpenOffice.

For internet surfing and downloading I simply use Ubuntu. In case of a new Ubuntu version, I complety remove the old Ubuntu.

You never performed an update? What is the version of your Windows 7? Is it remained on service pack 1?

Why I ask: I decided to switch from my old XP to Windows 7 (a Win7 SP1 licence and the Installation image lies on my desk), but the rumors about the Win10 spy updates for Windows 7 make me feel uncomfortable.

I have also W7 SP1. After my activation I have never contact with internet again. So not to worry about virus. And after hearing about W10 one more advantage. I mainly use for PB and making documents for work. It's still running smoothly. I have ubuntu on a seperate computer, but of course it's also possible to perform dual boot on one computer. In that case you can use ubuntu for downloading trusted files and place them in a W7 folder. Then when you boot W7, you can access the file.

They are not rumors.
Here's a handy guide for those in the avoid nasty Win7 updates camp.

I'll second the Win7/XP dual boot with UBUNTU as a very handy configuration.

Quick Tip:
You can use your iPad as an additional screen for the Mac (and PCs), using Duet.
Just connect the iPad with the Lightning-USB cable (the one that comes with it, for the power adapter).

one thing with windows 10 that irritates me to no end is the lack of menus in the edge web browser and other apps, I don't like icons instead of meaningful menus.
