Interesting - I have a very familiar noise from a cpu fan whose bearing is a bit sticky - it's better at high revs but the problem is when the temperature is just high enough for the fan to kick-in. It runs slowly, noisily, stops when the temp is good, then 5 mins later starts all over again. In fact I think this 'micro management' of fan speed is detrimental to the bearings.

i will wait until summer when the weather are hot to look again at the fan if the noise begins again, but the problem is that the vibrations are reaching the case, and when we press the case with a finger or a weight the tone change. and when i open the case the noise reduced too much. these
contradictions 2 years ago makes me depressed too much so i set it aside for 2 years without using it at all. i look seriously to the fanless asus
http://google.com/search?q=EB1037+fanless provided by Joakim Christiansen, it has good spec. and suitable for running all the time without worrying about the fan even it can be used as a tiny server. but it still does not hit the market , they sell it in Australia. and still not available in amazon. its price in Australia and china are still high

Actually, that doesn't sound like coil whine..
If you mean the "mmmmmm" sound that sounds like background fan noise.. Its possible that you have a bad bearing, but my experience with bad bearings has been more of a "grindy" "whirrrrrr" sound..
Try taking an empty cardboard tube (paper towel, toilet paper, etc) and listening at different spots if your PC with the tube up to your ear, pointing it at various sources of noise. That can help isolate where the noise is coming from

Heh..I'm sort of 'lucky'. I've got 'minor' tinnitus and I truly appreciate external noices

9 fans (three on gfx card alone) in my cabinet dampens the absurd inner ear ringing.
It requires exceptional practice to be able to ignore the constant high pitch sound inside ones head.

A silent pc has a "scary 'ring' to it" for me. ;-D

DK_PETER, before several years i spent 2 months thinking that the sound of the motor inside my brain is the sound of a refrigerator truck parking somewhere in the nearby, i never was aware about the tinnitus, i don't know how it is gone exactly after several months of a truck motor inside my brain, but i took zinc tablets (from jamieson) (useful for colds symptoms, but not too much it can harm, it is a metal) also try multivitamins which contains B complex.
try one tablet zinc and monitor yourself if it has some effect or not
i believe in the lowest possible medicine.
Edit: the Multivitamins i used contains trace elements from all minerals such as copper, magn, zinc, manganese, chromium, molyb, selenium, boron, nickl, etc.
the ear noise does not disappear completely it is going on off like a planetary movement. but it is evident that the vitamin complex with minerals are useful if we use it at low dosage and on demand.

now i know definitely that using 2 hard disks cause this particular desktop computer hp7300 to produce noice, look possible explanation
http://purebasic.fr/english/viewtopic.p ... us#p439903 by Joakim Christiansen . so i have installed only one 500 GB hard disk.
last week the Geforce VGA 520GT Fan begins to produce a noise, i have cleaned it but it stay noisy, so have installed Fanless asus geforce 640
http://www.asus.com/Graphics-Cards/GT640DCSL2GD3/, it has big tubes filled with liquid, it is very big and barely fit in the hp7300 desktop case, but i can close the case cover even touching the card tubes. now there is no noise at all except the natural shshshhsh from my brain/ear neuro system. fortunately the desktops great Intel CPU's with its big fans rarely producing noise, certainly Intel have made good job and design. it is always or mostly the graphics cards fans noise.

passive/silent cooling is nice and all except when you go to play some AAA 3D game or do anything with 4K or even 1080 then you realize after troubleshooting the makers of those big cooling blocks don't make them big enough or with good enough materials(like silver) to dissipate at a acceptable rate.
Look at my last post. Liquid cooling(it's actually cheap now even from good companies) or aftermarket blocks and fans. You buy fans by bearing type, size, and speed. You need to pick from good companies too because of QA.
If you have a fan that makes noise sometimes it's likely temperature change effecting bearing lubrication or physical change. I think really good companies make fans that go up to 10,000 hours or somewhere before they start to fatigue do to the chemistry of the lube or electro-mechanical part quality. Basically the multi-bearing and hydro-sleeve types are the best bearings with bearing lasting longer and hydro-sleeve being quieter.
