I agree!

Many potential users must be put off using Linux because if the program you want to use is not in a repository, a lot of time can be wasted trying and often failing.

Slow connection? I have standard ADSL2 and it was less than an hour.
braggart???
Anyway, long download times are no excuse: set it off overnight and
it's ready in the morning. :P
If I really wanted it.
> Chrome being the default browser is enough for me to defer
LOL, you can change it to Firefox or something else if you want. That's like saying you'll defer Windows because IE is installed by default.
Well yeah.
I still feel better for never having it on my system.
> Ubuntu would be a wee bit faster running the same hardware
But it's not; that's the problem. I tried Ubuntu before, and it was slower than Zorin OS and Ubuntu also didn't play any of my media. That's why I'm so happy to find Zorin OS. :D Anyway, I'm happy.
It's all in your head and I'm happy for you.

It's a Linux for the masses.
Paul wrote:Um... ZorinOZ Lite - 665Mb, for older/slower hardware and fits on CD
That's from a year ago. Who wants to run that?
The current Lite version weighs in at 786 MB.
I would not waste one of my few remaining 800 MB (90 minute) blank CD-Rs on that image as I am sure that it requires more to be installed to be useful for me.
If you want a tiny yet useful Linux that resides on a Live-CD and actually runs well on OLDER motherboards and graphics cards, then try Wary Puppy.

davido, I seriously doubt if PureBasic's not being in a repository will put off the average PureBasic user.
The install is trivial, although I do agree with applePi in the sense that the PureBasic install in Linux could be better automated.

Ubuntu also didn't play any of my media.
To be fair, they tell you this in advance. They make it very clear they only include free codecs.

*edit* Correction. They used to make it very clear. A quick gander at their site sees that info no longer available and only briefly covered on the Wiki.

@heartbone

Thank you for your comments.
I think that my comments were, perhaps, a little strong.
You put it rather better. Thank you.

I might add that what is trivial to you may not be so trivial for me!

Zorin OS does look appealing to Windows user like myself. I have dabbled with some others and had great success. Thanks PB for recommending.

But it's not; that's the problem. I tried Ubuntu before, and it was slower than Zorin OS
... I can believe it. I've seen this when systems don't have the right drivers used, things seems to work but sluggish.

Regarding older computers... I've seen pictures of Wary Puppy, didn't like at all. If I was using older computer, I would definitely give Zorin Lite a shot.

Just my opinions.

I obviously missed the message.

Doesn't matter... hated Ubuntu, love Zorin... all is good! ;)

Yeah, I sometimes get angry and post things that I regret,
so I tend to edit or delete the post after. Trying to control
myself more these days, instead of flying off the handle.
(Telling me it's all in my head tends to get me angry). :)

Thanks for clarifying that, Kuron. Good to know I wasn't going blind!

I edited my previous post. That info used to be clearly marked. I haven't followed their site since Unity hit. Now, that info is no longer clearly displayed and is only quasi touched on in the Wiki.

the live dvd works okay on my everyday pc and it shows all the partitions i have and can run purebasic ide by just double click the purebasic file in the compilers folder. this dbl click on this file was not working in the ubuntu env. now i can run all the programs except the graphics which needs other packages to install.
it detects the wireless signals from my router and can connect to the web. in general it is a usable env. and i will manage to install it on the hard disk.

also i have tried my older much slower computer celeron 2.53 GHZ, 512 MB ram. hard disk 40 GB, graphics card built in, using shared memory. the first partition have windows 7 installed , i have burned the zorin os dvd using that win7 on that machine.
after the 80 minutes installation process on the hard disk and it succeeded in this showing pictures and info while installation but when reboot it display a message "the system is running in low graphic mode, your screen, graphic card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly you will need to configure these yourself"
and the computer freezes, i have tried the two way of install 1- alongside windows 7 and 2- something else
and it can't run after the install in a system which windows 7 installed and run easily. we can see why microsoft spend billions of dollars for the OS development,
the next month i will try zorin lite on that system.
i have noticed from long time ago that accessing the web from linux then rebooting again to the windows xp i find too much difficulty in reconnecting again to the web as if linux change something in the wireless router which have a wireless modem in one package. but this is only in windows xp , windows 7 can restore connections easily after linux session.

Ubuntu with Unity feels slow on my laptop too. If you want a nice snappy feel go for XFCE, LXDE or OpenBox, avoid Unity or KDE.
I really don't get the fuss over codecs though, it's only a matter of ticking a checkbox on the Ubuntu installer to say you want them.

I use Ubuntu Studio rather than the main Ubuntu distro because XFCE and the bundled programs (which include ffmpeg, LibreOffice, Inkscape, Blender, Gimp, Ardour, PureData and more...) make it quite a bit better imo.

I was quite an avid distro-hopper until I discovered Ubuntu Studio, it's my favourite OS to date by quite some margin (and I even paid the EUR 10 for Zorin).

Not quite. You think I didn't do that? I got an error saying that no
codecs were found or could be installed. This was Ubuntu 10, so it's
probably fixed now. Don't know, don't care: Zorin has won me. :)

I tried Zorin, looked nice. But on the second reboot (the next day), parts of it started crashing (?????) when I went and accessed the menu.

The day I installed it, it was working fine.

PcLinuxOs (Redhat based), Linux Mint (Which I assume is Ubuntu derivative?), Knoppix seem to work okay.
