Re: Please help finding a good name for my program
Hi,
thanks to all of you for your interest and participation.
From my point of view, the situation would be different if this program of mine were a 1000,- $ top-selling product
... but it's Freeware, which I wrote just for fun, and for the benefit of everyone who can make use of it. It doesn't make sense for me (and is not fun anymore) to waste lifetime and money because of its name in a legal dispute with a big company.

All your efforts are welcome. However, I will change the name, so helping me to find a good one would be most helpful for me.
Thanks.

My most recent idea is PluriLink. Does that sound good for native English speakers?
"pluri-" is a prefix derived from the Latin word "plus", meaning "many", several". So I think "PluriLink" could mean something like "multi-purpose link", no?
Thanks again, Little John

Exactly. "FlexLink" seems to be a pretty big company, they definitely will have "a little" more money than me for a legal dispute.MachineCode wrote:Of course, they'll take you to court to try to stop you [...]; but the big question is: do you have the money to fight for that win?

The full story actually is, that I had decided to change the name before I started this thread. That's why I chose the thread title as it is.MachineCode wrote:Oh, NOW we get the full story.juror wrote:FlexLink has MES software...Software DOES exist after all. Yes, I agree now that a name change would be needed.

Thank you, I like it. And you activated some "biological associations" in my head, I then thougt myself of "tendril".J. Baker wrote:Radix - the root or point of origin
Since your program creates links, I thought of roots. All roots come from some point of origin (your app).
Thank you, much appreciated!TI-994A wrote:VerLink sounds pretty good. And a few spitballs: AdaptaLink, LinkEZ, FlexiBlink....Little John wrote:

I absolutely agree! And thanks for your suggestions! I had thought of "LinkLink" myself, too.IdeasVacuum wrote:...Its far better to conjurer up a new unique name of your own and be done with it - litigation is not just costly money wise, it is detrimental to your health.

Hi Thomas,
thanks for the info!
it's really a big problem. Very many words are already "sold out".

Re: Please help finding a good name for my program
After having drunken some glasses of that stuff, one probably is not able to say the name anymore.
Linkki (the Finnish word for "link") and FlexyLink also sound nice to me.

I think FlexyLink sounds better
though I wouldn't worry to much about the cease and desist concerning the Trademark
1) the trademark is for the logo as a word, not the word itself and the trade mark specifically specifies the domain it's relevant too
which has nothing to do with software product

2) they'd have to take you to court in Germany

Thank you for your "fireworks of ideas".
I'll think about the names, and check which one is already in use.
Thanks again, Little John

Classical Brainstorming. Write down everything that comes to mindLittle John wrote:Thank you for your "fireworks of ideas".
without rating it, whatever non-sense it may be.
You may want to use something like dict.cc and dict.leo.org for finding new associations.
Later you evaluate the ideas/words and look for the good stuff, if any.

Besides other things, I did do so during the last 3 days.Danilo wrote:You may want to use something like dict.cc and dict.leo.org for finding new associations.
(I also found e.g. Google translator useful for this.)

"FlexyLink" was my favourite new name.
But in the meantime, an experienced man told me:

But in the meantime, an experienced man told me:
I asked that company whether they have any objections against "FlexyLink", and actually they said that it's too close to their registered brand name "FlexLink".In general, 1 character difference isn't considered as sufficient in trademark law - normally at least 2 characters must be different, even more if the name sounds too similar.
Someone suggested (my given name is "Juergen"):
Or what about "FlexpoLink" (flexible portable link) or "FleksLink"?Juerlink sounds good to me, close enough to "your link" !

Re: Please help finding a good name for my program
If they didn't have a presence in Germany, it wouldn't be a problem, but since they have quite a base there, it would be better to steer clear.Little John wrote:"FlexyLink" was my favourite new name.

JuerLink looks nice, and would also sound nice if pronounced as it should, with the "y" sound; but if it is pronounced with the "j" sound, not as good. Anyway, just my opinion.Someone suggested (my given name is "Juergen"):Juerlink sounds good to me, close enough to "your link" !
