well the login looks different today... and I have been here for a while...
If it was a bot I wonder if it was written in PB as I have seen some bot type code being attempted...

But I have follwed the edict and said nothing!
Maybe a captcha each time we post like the dreaded canvas or 4chan... there are still spambots there but they are minimal.
Not that I go to 4chan ever anyway!

It already is set up for that. I had to pass a captcha to register.

I had the same problem in my forum, but I just replaced the captcha with one I made myself and that fixed the problem (for some time).

That's the only way to keep them out, the built in ones all usually get busted in no time at all, logic ones seem to work best, either a random question or having to identify something in an photo.

I'll admit I've been on here less since everytime I check for new posts theres quite alot of spam compared to PB related posts.
On another board, they have settings so that new users can't post link in their signatures, posts or details, nor pm people until they reach a certain number of posts, and a certain amount of time has passed. If they reach the post limit before a certain time it flags them to the mods as suspicious.
Also some forums just have an introduction forum, where you introduce yourself in a short paragraph and then you later get approved to post on all areas of the board.
I do like the idea of only licensed users being able to post, and non licensed ones and guests can view and post in a "demo" section I suppose. That would sort of limit the spam to that area of the board only though.
But if that's all too much change then a nice spam modification to the board would be nice. I guess the PB team are busy fixing and adding new stuff but if there was a web member who could modify the board to make it better protected against spam it would be nice.

If there was already a captcha registration then someone was registering manually. Maybe it could be set that you need to enter a captcha to post (only non licensed users). Yes it's not a great solution but perhaps it could be disabled for users after a while and they reach a certain amount of posts.

Zach wrote:I think all forums should be read-only access unless you are in the approved poster list
The forum is read only, until you are registered.
I like it, not beeing more complicated than that.
Zach wrote:Doom9 forums for instance, make you wait several days before you can post,
The spammer accounts, I've seen recently had allready adapted to that.
At least one of them, had been registered about 2 weeks ago.
Bots could easily be more patient to post, than a real person, looking for a solution for his problem
and it does not seem to be a nice thing to me, to prevent him/her from posting for any length of time,
just because there are spam bots in this world.
Zach wrote:There are all kinds of methods to curb the spam/trash, that don't require insane amounts of extra attention. We just have to research them is all.
And also, I believe, it's not impossible, to come up with own ideas as well.
Zach wrote:I have to say I don't see a lot of the spam, even when I come back to the forum frequently. So they must be doing a half decent job at containment.

Exactly.

They say that if you let a cow lick your head it will grow hair in that spot...
In all seriousness, the spam doesn't affect me. It's annoying but it's no reason to over-dramatize and leave this wonderful community!
