If it were that simple it would have been done on day one.
I have to agree, despite how recless they were even BP would realize that it'd be far cheaper to permanently cap this well and drill another than what it could potentially cost to clean up a major spill.

Something else no one mentions is Trans-Ocean, why are they not being held at least partially liable? It was their drilling platform and their crew operating the platform for BP. When BP pushed them for more speed ignoring obvious safety issues, they should have stood their ground and told BP no. Instead they allowed BP to bully them into ignoring safety issues and to keep drilling.

SFSxOI> Once again, what you may think, economy is not the main leader of this world. The economy/market must follow rules, given by laws/estates/politics. It's why you don't have poison in food, safe toys, road signs, and so on.
Lately, economy has taken over, and have more power than ever. We have to be extremely cautious, because this is leading to a dangerous world, where safety and societal well being is not as important as the particular profit, without any ethic. In a democratic world, you can vote to who is giving best conditions to development, in a long term vision. By definition, economy has no ethic goal, so we have to be cautious to not give it our destiny.
