Hi Michel,

hunting for examples you quickly come across somehow 'outdated' codes, and that's when the PB-Help\History really comes in handy to find out which commands have come and gone.
And scrolling down to '15. April 2007 : Version 4.00' you'll find a hidden link to major changes which took place between v. 3.94 and v. 4.xx, sorted by libraries.

Well your thread pushed me to do what I long thought about - which is to concentrate all the Help-included examples into a single chm-file, for a quicker overview and inspiration.
So, if you like, here you are: PB-Examples_v441.chm ~ and of course everybody is wellcome to grab it ~
(Mind: not all of them work with the demo-version)

This looks like it could be very useful, however I can not view any of the examples. The chm opens, but the only display is of Navigation canceled. I'm on Win 7.

Suggestions?

Then click the "Unblock" button near the bottom of the dialog.
Then click "OK" and open the .chm file for normal viewing.
This happens on my Windows XP sp3 for many of the help files.
Don't know about Windows 7.

I've never heard about this problem before, but found 'googling' that skywalks tip should work with Win 7 - hopefully . Thanks for that tip.

Still, does anybody have an idea what I could do, to prevent this, as the M$ Help Workshop is a fairly old tool, but still the 'actual / relevant' one ? or does it need a kind of 'security certification' ? or an elevating IE7 appreciation

Well, here's one tool you like to know about: a freeware standalone CHM Decoder (v2.1) with which you can easily decompress any CHM-file back to it's containing html-files & pictures ... (that's how I get them )

Though I like chm there's one main disadvantage that it only works on one OS. So (ponder ponder) I think it's fair if I'll make a simple framed browser-version too.

Thanks again for all the good advice and explanations, and I will certainly have a good look at any example code. Meanwhile I just discovered "PureBasic - A Beginner's Guide" by Kale which may also prove handy.
Of course I didn't know that PureBasic is the result of just a small programming team. Taking that in consideration it is quite amazing what they have already achieved - and still are at it.
As I said, I am quite pleased that my remarks already triggered some response. Unfortunately I can't make a full switch to PureBasic right now because of an unfinished project in another language and it would perhaps take ages to rewrite all the code and adapt it to PB's concept.
Better not force things. As an old African saying goes : "one eats an elephant one small piece at a time".

As for examples: I think all samples in the Survival Guide are up to 4.xx, but I haven't checked them all

i would like to add to this, when i first stumbled across PB i was vary daunted, but the user examples found here and at various other sites soon got me on track and until now iv never had the need to sign up to the forum as any thing i needed to know was already out there, all i had to do was look

i have seen a lot of posts dissing PB for basically stupid reasons and i have always maintained my initial thoughts about this program, which were "wow, this programme's great"

in the last 2/3 years PB has come on leaps and bounds, the current IDE is fantastic, the project management feature is my favourite improvement tho, but it does not hurt to add the visual elements as well, the PB team have done a fantastic job, i thank you all

the user base are also doing a fantastic job, i thank every one of you that have posted code/examples/and even setup websites full of code/examples

my only gripe is the VD, but that's like refusing cake because you don't like cherry's, the VD is a tool, not the program, the program its self rocks

my point is, i was a non programmer when i first found PB, now PB is my income, if i can master this language, a person with a programming background should also be able to master it very quickly, just give it a little time and you soon be be a master

Yes the project management in the IDE makes one hell of a lot of difference; a great addition.

Michel, I see what you mean. I work for two companies (one of them is a day job) and most of the projects are written in Java, Delphi or C# (I really don't like the latter, just my opinion).
Little by little I started developing for them little DLL libraries and small applications that made some workmates raise an eyebrow. All of them were made with Purebasic.
It's really rewarding to write something in a language that's easy to understand and very fast. After all, it makes software programming fun.
I'm not affiliated with Fantaisie Software in any ways, I'm a just a user who admires PB for what it represents today for me. It's very particular.

I see you mentioned the VD not being updated enough and you're right. But it's a great tool for small utilities.
Get PureFORM and you'll be able to create even more advanced GUIs.

The help file is the best help file I've seen. It's tidy, it's easy to understand (straightforward) and very small. I hate the MSDN online help because it's the opposite. It was supposed to simplify the way we browse through help files (see Google for instance) but each version makes it more frustating.

Perhaps just to close this topic : LuaDev, I am used to "read between the lines" (please don't get me wrong on this). There is one important point you mention :

If you are one of those that are gifted to learn without any help whatsoever, you deserve every credit. But not all of us can. If this were so, all schools (even universities) teaching informatics and computing would become obsolete and so would this or any other programmer's forum.
But more important : Only working with one programming language is a great advantage. As you read or search more topics here, you will notice that a large part of the questions are about dealing with the difference between PureBasic and other similar languages.
The best comparison would be this : You started learning to program in QuickBasic (ages ago you learned to speak Spanish). Then you want to move to modular programming and you learn Visual Basic (you learn French) and RealBasic (Canadian French). And now you want to add PureBasic (that's Italian) because it has much in common with QuickBasic. Now there is not much difference between French and it's Canadian counterpart, but there is between French and Spanish or Italian. Spanish and Italian have much in common, but by now you have forgotten much of your Spanish. See what I mean ?
As a new member myself, I never wondered how big the PureBasic community is. I just checked and as I write this, there are 3791 registered members in these forums (you being number 3783 ). There must be some reason for this forum to exist...

i understand the points you make, but i think you misunderstood my point, i wasn't saying there's no need for the user forum, this forum is a gold mine of information and it helped me (and still is) a huge amount, all i was saying that for my purpose i dident need to make any help requests because the information i required was already here somewhere, all i had to do was look for it, i may have not registered or got involved with the community but i was very much a active forum searcher

the point i was trying to make was: PureBasic is easy to learn even for a non programmer but only with the help of this user forum and support sites, and the information held within this forum is vital to any budding PB programmer

and, yes, me sticking to just PB has its advantages, i dont know or use VB6, C++, Java ETC, i program purely with PB and lua, so i have a huge advantage over someone that uses lots of languages in the fact iv only one language to focus on, maybe if i started learning other languages then i would not be as skilled as i am today, but im to old to start now, lol

the TI94A came out one year before I started programming the C64.
so, you seem to be about my Generation... maybe I started programming earlier in life.
