damage to the limited word research and also no more common "MailBox" for "upload" code file too big or screen shoot explanatory...

80x80 is kinda tiny, and 6 kb is not enough for any normal picture... just mentioning it.
Maximum dimensions; width: 80 pixels, height: 80 pixels, file size: 6.00 KiB.

We live with this since five years in the german forums.
look at my avatar and see what you can do in 80x80x6K.
tip: use JPG at 92-94% with color-subsampling off.

The old forum used to open external links in a new tab (at least in Firefox) - the 'new' forum does not. Any way to make it do this again?

Just use your middle mouse button to open any link in a new tab.

hehe, you're right. I use this on other sites, but it just grew into a habit that clicking on the links on the forum would open a new tab
