Does anyone else find that they read more honesty in translated posts like KCC's than most posts in perfect English?

It's like native English speakers can hide behind words and detract from the point easily, but when someone is using a translator there's no hiding. I've noticed this a lot, not just with French people but Russian's and lots of parts of Europe too.

Someone PM'ed me and said it was racist for me (and others) to laugh at Kwaï chang caïne's English language posts.
And you actually wasted your time in creating a forum thread for that nonsense? Don't you have better things to do? Like scratching your ass? Having a dump? Paint your kitchen chair and watch it dry? Whoever PN'ed that to you has no life at all.

Re: Is laughing at Kwaï wrong or racist?

Then someone needs to look up the definition of racist. The way someone uses a language, and someone else finding comedic value in that usage, is not a matter of racism. However, if someone uses a language in a certain way and another relates that use to the persons nationality, race, creed, origin, or ethnic background, or even a disability, and uses that persons use of the language in that relationship to deny, prevent, degrade, humiliate, embarrras, and is using the language use as a substitute for the persons nationality, race, creed, origin, or ethnic background then it is racism (like for example, saying that all people from Spain who speak english badly are not allowed to use the forum - thats racism). But, that being said, a post on the internet that is a simple usage or mis-uasge of a language and someone chuckles, or laughs, or finds entertainment or critique value in the mis-use or use of the language is not racism. Expressing that comedic entertainment or critique in some way in a public forum may serve to make the person shy or less prone to participate because there is a point where enough is enough and too much may in fact be detrimental in some way. In the same context, anyone who ever laughed at something ex-president Bush ever said wrong would then be racists?

I think Kwaï is an intelligent person who is constantly trying to learn and might one day outpace us all in everything. He seems to want to learn something new everyday, and theres nothing that can be said against a person who wants to learn, after all; how many of you purposely sought out a learning experience today? Kwaï seems to do it every day.

I've enjoyed his posts, in fact, I admit, I come by the forum sometimes during my work day to get a chuckle out of his posts but i'm not laughing at him, i'm laughing at the turn of phrases or combination of wording that sometimes seem to just tickle me.

So there in lies the difference in terms of racism; laughing at the wording and not the person - one is not racism and the other might be.

Kwaï is a good sort, I don't think he takes offense and I think he even joins in the comedic value some way or another sometimes. He seems just simply happy to be alive, and theres nothing wrong that can be said for a person who wants to learn, is happy to be alive, and can laugh at his own mistakes or (in the case of the forum) posts.

Yep, for the exact same reason that you bothered to reply.

I think you need to realize you are not laughing about Kwai ...

You are actually laughing about the Google Translator! :!:

Yes, I'm laughing at the mangled English, not Kwai himself. The person
who emailed me and said it's racist should consider that fact, and not
tell me I'd be killed in some countries for laughing at it.

i'm not sure kwai use google translator, anyway i assure you that his posts on the french forum are as funny as the ones here.

kwai likes acting like that, he loves making strange sentences and uses a lot of superlative words everywhere :)

someone saying that mocking the way kwai speak or laughing about what he say is rascist might consider use his brain twice before posting.

as a side note at my work there's a guy comming back from usa from a 20 years life there , he speak french like kcc speak english :p well ... not as bad i admit ... we have great fun with him and he's a real good fellow. no rascism there :)

sorry for my bad english :)

and if in a country you might being killed just by laughing about kcc english it's real sad, and is this guy lives there he might consider going elsewhere ...

don't think so...

somewhere in Africa, or in the Bronx, you will get killed for joking about someone...

sure, in China you could also get killed for joking about the wrong someone...
but that could happen everywhere in the world.

I don't think it was racist but do think it was rude unless you knew in advance that it was Kwai's intention to make you laugh.
Is it cruel and/or racist to laugh at Kwaï chang caïne?
Yes 8% [ 3 ]
No 55% [ 20 ]
Only if Kwaï is offended 36% [ 13 ]
Total Votes : 36
I had thought that Yes would have had the most votes or at the very least only if Kwai is offended. But No having the most votes? I'm actually disappointed.

I always try to treat people the way I'd like them to treat me and being laughed at because I don't know a language very well isn't how I'd want to be treated.

No offense intended but being disappointed because of a majority vote of "No" is also surprising. I would be led to believe that you have never read one of Kwai's messages (which should have weighed in heavily in making a vote), but how could anyone miss them?
Tipperton wrote:I don't think it was racist but do think it was rude unless you knew in advance that it was Kwai's intention to make you laugh.
If you have a doubt about whether Kwai intended to make you laugh you haven't read his messages.
For instance, in a thread most recently started by Kwai, Kwai posted 9 messages with a smiley (emoticon) count per message of between 6 and 35.

In other words, if a person has doubts about whether Kwai intends to make readers laugh then the doubting person is grossly unperceptive. On the other hand, the only thing that is usually in question is what he actually "intended" to say. :D

It would seem Kwai's hope, like most here, is to receive answers to his queries and to be of some help in return (if possible). The only thing that should get a "No" response is if someone was mocked for simply asking a question.

I also agree with Kwai, it's strange for him to be the subject of so many threads, instead of just his questions. He seems to be very sensational. :D

@Tipperton; Perhaps the No voters feel that racism is about the intentions of the speaker rather than how it's received.

(I didn't vote BTW)

I don't think it's this black and white. (no pun intended)

IMO intention is important but sometimes thoughts spoken in ignorance that are not ill intended are racist. Likewise, some people get offended because they see racism where non exists. Sometimes people make racist remarks and the recipient doesn't take offence.

Sometime racism is more violent I've seen people spit on others just based on their nationality and I've seen it beurocratically with laws which single out foreigners or have signs on the doors of shops saying "No Foreigners"

Lots of shades of grey on this one I think.
