Had some nice arguments with these guys and it seems something has changed their end with their printer setup i've pulled the book version from sale. After many canned responses and much anger and shouting i got this reply.
Hi Gary

Evidently you know what you’re doing, but you have to understand that many Lulu authors use pdf-creation software without necessarily knowing all the ins and outs, and we have to operate on that basis until we learn otherwise.

You’re right that the problem is more than likely with the digital printers that Lulu’s print partners use, but the result of the turnaround speed of print on demand that is that printers will be set up fairly straightforwardly.

Best wishes

I had a similar problem a long time ago...
it this kinky FontMapper that makes sure to load ANY Font, to be able to print SOMETHING.

back in the 90ies I worked days but days for the Layout of a 3-Days-OpenAir-Fastival near my Home Village.
I did it for free and for the glory, to make other Bands and Events let me design their Posters,
just recieved three tickets for the event.

I delivered in Soft, they said "we got a company to print them"...

do I have to say they did not have the correct Fonts?
I almost killed that bloody bitch who said "oh, the posters don't look the Way you showed before.." as if it was MY fault.
I did not go to that festival, I was so angry I never talked to those people again.

...

Thank's for that Information, seems I would not ask "Lulu" if I needed print_on_demand...
