partly I guess. Considering the population of this planet though, it takes the huge infrastructure of large corporations to keep it going... or gov'ts if you prefer communism I guess

unfortunately the economy is not perfect, which means the profit goes only to the waltons and its shareholders.

if people want a really good economy where wealth is not concentrated on few large companies, people should support the small independent retail stores. you might not get stuff cheap from china, but at least everyone is supporting each other.
Thats part of the economic problem in the U.S. where small business accounts for almost 70% of the revenue flow of business overall in the U.S. The issue now is that the large corporations are the ones who use the larger portion of the credit. Small business accounts for a much smaller share of the credit while producing almost 70% of the revenue, but without the credit they could not remain in business. The credit industry mostly bases its cash flow on those that use the larger portion, which has the effect of placing larger concentrations of wealth with the larger companies due to their abilities to access larger portions of credit because they have a greater amount of assets to back the credit given. This is one reason why it was important to bail out some large corporations and the credit industry, if those corporations defaulted on the credit they had taken it would have been devasting to the already wrecked credit industry which would mean the credit that small business was getting would no longer be available to them which in turn would have devastated small businnes and when they went down along with them goes 70% of the revenue flow in the country.

In fact with their standard of chocolate and beer it's really quite an achievement for so many Americans to have got so fat.

You'd imagine the border between Switzerland and France would be where the obesity crisis would have hit first. :)

One of my friends went on the Atkins diet, after a week his girlfriend decided the fat was preferable to the bad breath.

You want to diet? Then forget the fancy diets, simply do;

1. Several small snacks a day instead of full meals a few times a day. Include fruit like apples and grapes. Also include things that stimulate matabolism and digestion like vegatables.

2. Eat one good balanced meal a day, you can even have a fast food hamburger type meal once every three to four days. You don't have to stick to things like fish and chicken, you can eat anything you want for the meal as long as its a balanced meal. Proteins are better then carb's for dieting but some carbs are needed by the body. Go light on the starches like potatoes. For the balanced meal be reasonable with portions, don't pig out.

3. Don't eat within 3 - 4 hours of bed time. Don't go to bed on a full stomach.

4. Drink at least two quarts of water each day.

5. Decrease your sugar intake to 1/4 of what it is now. Don't forget that a lot of processed foods contain a bunch of sugar (like store bought bread), so take that into account for sugar intake.

6. Limit your carbonated or caffienated beverages (like coffee) to 1/4 of what you consume now. Don't consume carbonated or caffienated beverages within six hours of bed time. Limit your alcohol intake to 1/4 of what you do now, red wine is better then beer by a whole lot for dieting like this. A cool beverage is better then a warm or hot one.

7. Some type of exercise about once a week that lasts for about an hour is good too, but not necessary if your not completly sedimentary. Its winter, so shovelling snow is good. You want something that gets your heart rate up and labors your breathing a little like running maybe.

Do this for about 30 to 40 days and you'll lose almost 30 pounds. Continue it and you will lose some more, but an important point is don't diet below your minimum weight for your age and height. If you go below your minimum you body will want to strike back and you will find yourself tired, getting sick more often, and eating more, and when the weight comes back it will be harder to get rid of. Anyone just about can do this. You should not feel hungry at all if you are doing the several snacks a day. And guess what, you will not have bad breath (unless your have some sort of dental issue). :)

Just stopping eating at all is not healthy and does not lead to managable weight, in fact if you just stop eating you actually cause injury to your body which may not be reversable and may not manifest its self for many years, it also leads to more eating and faster weight gain as you get older.

Forget dieting. If you want to lose weight, stop eating until you have reached the desired weight. If you're hungry, chew gum.

Back on topic, IMHO this story is about your capitalist G.W.B society, not necessarily OUR society. :roll:
