About weekly there is a story on the nightly news about some old person that fell for such a scam.

My favorite is the FAKE BILL where you get a real looking bill inthe mail (with FINAL NOTICE) in large angry letters on the envelope and you are required to pay $50.00 to 900.00 (the largest amount I have seen) these are targeted at senior citizens who are afraid of debt. My mom gets them often. She got a bill for $66.00 for Bath Towels. At the bottom in incredibly small type font was "This is not a real bill. By submitting your check or credit card information you are agreeing..." To ORDER crappy ass towels from this service.

I told my friend John and he thought I was crazy.

Then he got a fake bill for bed linens when his daughter was accepted at University of Texas. A lot of parents did.

Evil people.

Here they target businesses with fake bills. It never actually says it is bill, it just looks a heck of a lot like a bill and a final demand. IIRC the words are "Final Notice" or something.

It is usually for some smallish amount associated with some advert in some obscure magazine.

The magazine is real - maybe issues a handful of copies once a year or so.

And, as with the linens, the "bill" is actually an order to have an advert inserted in the magazine.

The whole thing is legal - or used to be. I seem to recall some talk of a crackdown on the practice.
