or what if the virus writer finds a way to cover the tracks of the fact a change has happened. A file goes from clean to infected but with no record of a change. (not possible in theory if you are hooking the file system but you can never be 100% sure)

It's been a l-o-n-g time since I had a virus (somewhat attritutible to nod), but as I remember, it would scan any file I 'touched' (even when I opened a directory, as I recall) and let me know if there was an infection.
Not sure about progs I didn't touch, such as those run at startup etc, but it does recommend periodic full scans - probably run when you're not planning on using the compyuter for a while.
Nod is one of a handfull of programs I feel deserving of a cash outlay, rather than relying on a free service.
cheers

I've not had a Virus in years. In fact, ever since I made Linux my main operating system, I've never had a virus...

So after checking your fixed drives, it relies on checking only for changes. IE, downloads, installs, updates and etc?
No. Its a shield as anything else, monitoring files-on-access and things like http and pop3, not disturbing other protocols (don't remember if it has a p2p guard too, though. At work atm, here its norton).
The difference is how good it is at catching things, and how fast/resource friendly it is

Absolutely. Also one of the things I decided to pay for
@foz: how can you know you don't have a virus? You could have a keylogger installed without knowing it. Even on linux

As said, Nod is not a changed-only tool

I've only had a virus once. It survived multiple formats and ate every .exe file on my computer.

How offtopic is this forum, I'm wondering.
Whenever you look something up, you end up wasting hours and hours due to the fact that 90% is offtopic inside serious threads...

Better than the sarcastic putdowns that masquerade as answers at times.
