Well said.

I'm all for trying other languages but don't go into deep technical discussions here.

I'm not going to use a language which can't even install start menu entries in the correct location. Or that can't even save the window position of it's IDE. And can't even install an uninstaller that works!

And yes, the custom GUI toolkit is slow.

It basically adjusts to your desktop area which Windows changes when the task bar auto hides.
Odd that only your language suffers this issue. I use windowed mode in all games and apps and I always "center" the window and I use a plethora of different languages, yours is the first I have ever encountered with this nauseating habit. And yes, I do mean nauseating. I am still feeling very sick from the lovely experience of using your "bouncing windows" language yesterday.
And yes, the custom GUI toolkit is slow.
Definitely slower than it should be, tested on 1GHz/512MB RAM/Geforce FX 5200 128MB VRAM.

Still a nice feature-set and decent syntax, but the cons definitely outweigh the pros for me right now.

The "bouncing windows" probably wouldn't bother most. But several years ago, as a result of surgery to remove cancer, I had problems with seizures. I haven't had a seizure in years, but testing this language did indeed make me sick and I still don't feel all that great as this is being edited Sunday afternoon.

Please keep in mind that this is a new, pre-release SDK...

Post by jerstlouis »

Guys, this is a first pre-release of the SDK... There are still many rough edges to smooth out, please look into the potential of what it can become...
All these issues can and will be resolved.
And whatever you may say it is being used in many applications and game type applications without being slow at all.
Please take further discussion registering in the Ecere forums at http://www.ecere.com/Vanilla/ or come visit us on IRC in #ecere at irc.freenode.net .

Everything has potential (except custom GUI toolkits).

I disagree. Projects like GTK totally blow your argument out of the water. With more development, I cannot see why EC's custom GUI system would not improve with constructive criticism, rather than a generalised blanket statement of all custom GUI's are crap.

I had a very quick play with EC tonight, and I didn't see anything particularly slow about it or the GUI.

I don't program quite as much as I used to, and my OOP skills aren't what I would call good... but, I personally found the language quite useable.

Hell, it's free for gods sake, what is your problem? :) I am sure if you went and spoke to the author via his forum or IRC and pointed out to him what you considered problems in a reasoned and constructive argument... I bet he would make efforts to address the problems. But, to just slag the guy to death and call him a noob is a bit shitty IMHO.

Yeah, I know.... It's normally me giving people shit, and not defending somebody else... but this guy didn't advertise his product here, somebody else did. Yes, he popped his head in the door, says hi and gets a load of shit for his trouble.

GTK is not realy a custom GUI toolkit when it's the native form of GUI Toolkit under X

I am confused, isn't that how we welcome everybody to the PB community?

But it isn't native to X is it. It's native to Gnome. It just happens to interface with X... Which all of the GUI under *nix do. But it runs pretty damn fast on windows and runs on a mac as well. Would you like to elaborate on your statement a little :P

I already addressed that in my prior post. And I paid the price for it already. No need for cheap shots.

I can't speak for Trond, but my reading of his post gave me the impression he was discussing this particular custom GUI, not custom GUIs in general.

Speed and functionality wise, the best custom GUI I have ever seen/used if the one Gammadyne made for SEAU:
