4 or 5 look best to me, but they are so similar, their votes should not be 'split'.
cheers

#NULL: Crazy as it seems, I like the idea of a hasselhof icon with a "thought bubble" coming out of it like in your mockup!
You should do an icon for the selector in the install.

I like number 1
Also, it will probably scale up and down better for those who like larger or smaller icons

yes they can

@PB, Microsoft isn't the kind of company to sue over little things like an icon, are they?
But if I had to choose another then I would go for 1 then 2.

Yes, as I said earlier in the thread.... No 1 will look the best at all icon sizes and will be instantly recognisable
I still think the name should change
How about a name like...... Smile

Not necessarily. If you just scaled the images down you have an enourmous loss of quality. You need to rescale the source file wich is most likley in a vector-based format. Furthermore, who says that the 16x16 icon should look like the 32x32? It's very common to design a different icon for such a small scale.
Maybe I'm going to much into detail but I just wanted to point out my graphical view on this.

Just don't call it Pure Message System... People would be asking each other if they have PMS... not good!
