No, you can upgrade to AmigaOS from vista, im pretty sure of it...

A Vic-20 or Timex/Sinclare would be an upgrade from Vista!

Heck even an original Altair 8800 would be an upgrade!

Yep, it appears that a lot of people don't actually like Vista.

Maybe if they renamed it to something like Vista ME if would be more popular.

CoCo 2 - My 1st real computer experience & I was using Editor Assmebler with "Z Bug"........ How cool is that!!

On another note, I havent played with Vista but I do really, really like Xp. Xp is a nice stable platform for me, but from what I have heard to date on Vista, well this pretty much explains why it is that I am looking so seriously at the various Distro's of Linux.

Gotta admit I have been thinking about looking at Linux but, as a complete newbie as far as Linux goes, where do you start.

Which one works best, is the most stable, works with the most hardware, works with the most software or even works!!

It's a minefield, at least with Windows you know where you stand, it works with most things and is pretty stable (my copy of XP has never crashed, blue screened or anything).

Yeah...

That I believe is the one big reason why Linux doesn't have the user base it could have. Its simply not as approachable or user friendly as Windows is.

Sure there are GUIs with graphical desktops for Linux, but from what I've heard, there's no standard so none of them are software compatible with the others, and I've also heard that none of them are particularly stable.

Until the Linux community can settle on a standard for a GUI and put forth one that is stable, it will never really get the user base it could have.

The other big problem for Linux is that by the time anyone begins to think about switching to it, they realize how big of an investment in Windows software they have and many abandon the idea very quickly.

There have been many times some friends and I have thought to switch to Linux but both of these "problems" have always stopped us.

(Just a few) disadvantages of Linux (of course IMHO):
-No standard distribution
-No standard desktop
-Incompatibility of Hardware drivers
-difficult software installation
-library dependencies (no powerful 'native' API)
...

As already said, it's just my opinion...

funny, all of my hardware worked right out of the box with Ubuntu. Only exception was my TV tuner card... which was also working within 30 minutes of installation.

I tripple boot though, that way I have the best of both worlds... sounds a bit Irish right? Ubuntu 64bit, Ubuntu 32bit and Windows XP.

I can't say I am disapointed with linux at all though. You have choices, although, I grant you, tooo damn many

. But I prefer Gnome as a desktop as it kinda reminds me of the amiga... The real killer with linux is no structure, each distro tends to throw configs into some washing machine and our pops your libs and configs into some random location... They fix that and it would help a massive amount!

Tell me about it, I've had to deal with three different flavors of Linux and except for a few pieces, nothing is in the same place in all three.

Talk about a techs nightmare!.... Sheesh!

What Linux needs in some massive company with unlimited funds to take over the whole project and standardise the whole thing and then re-release it in just a couple of flavours, something like...

Linux Home Basic
Linux Home Premium
Linux Business
Linux Ultimate

Trouble is they would probably start charging the earth for it!
