Maybe you misunderstood me.

WinXP64 is a 64bit OS, this means you will need 64bit drivers for your printer, modem, graphic etc. all the hardware you will attach to the OS.

That's why WinXP64 didn't make it... (and M$ wanted to push for Vista)

It was a dead horse the same time it hit the streets.

I've never seen a laptop or desktop being sold with WinXP64, which is a pity.
Every 64bit computer I saw came with WinXP32-MediaCenter.

But what do I know, maybe there are 64bit drivers for your hardware

Oh I understood you, I hadn't considered the driver side of going to 64 bit software... and I have some older hardware, like my scanner, that even 32 bit Vista probably won't support, much less a 64 bit OS.

That kinda means, 64 bit Vista won't make it either....

Now Microsoft sees what's good about OpenSource drivers^^Linux dirvers wil probably all run on 64bit as well as on 32bit.

Not necessarily, AFAIK Vista can't use WinXP drivers because it's a different driver model.
So if hardware manufacturers code new drivers for Vista they can code it with 32/64bit in mind and just use a compiler switch for a 32bit OS or 64bit OS.

It was a different story with WinXP64. Many manufacturers didn't write the WinXP drivers with 64bit in mind. So when they recompile their drivers for 64bit and the effort to make it work increases, they drop it.
Which doesn't mean there are no drivers for WinXP64, they are available but not for every hardware out there.

There will still be stuff to be cleaned up...
