About sex i agree with some ideas about it, but, it is a powerful master which make you very nice slaves.
The secret of life is in our cortex in our brain, that is what allow us to modify ourselves, etc. it allows us to be free, what can not say plants nor animals. Our cortex is what difference us from natural slavery of every animal.
Sir Isaac Newton (one of my most beloved beings) said: "every time a person is not thinking, is a lost time". (BTW: he died virgin

). I think absolutely same as him about that idea, just because any other thing we do apart of to thinking (like sentiments, emotions) is made with the brain-stem, which is the very arcaic part of our brain and that part is common in every viviparous and mammalians. And i consider some humans (sorry, but only a few) superior than the other reptiles, mammalians and viviparous. Pity that mooost humans are not superior than reptiles in most of the nature disciplines.

Whoo! So many answers, I would never have thought that this could be such an agitated discussion
I would like to give my two cents as well.
About sex, I think we can sum this up in the more general word: Fun! Spend life having fun, joy, pleasure, delight, whatever. Simply to enjoy life. That is a purpose, alright, as long as you have the ability to enjoy life. But what if you cannot? Possibly because you have to work 7 days a week, 16 hours a day? Or because you live in the fourth world, not being able to imagine how you will survive tomorrow? How can there be any joy whatsoever?
About the afterlife: I was not exactly hinting toward any religious assumption about an afterlife. On the contrary, I think that this is not at all a topic directly related to religion. Science has sought to find answers to the eternal question: Is there an afterlife, and if so, what is it like?, but so far, everything does not quite seem appropriate. And for all the claims that religions make (I am a catholic, btw.) about an afterlife, I do not think I will ever be able to believe any of them, until I actually have died. But until then (whenever that may be) I will just have to put with the uncertainty, and possibly the fear, about 'what's next'. But as hard as I try: I simply cannot believe that it will just be 'over'. There has to be something. I find it hard to believe, that my consciousness, my perceiving, experiencing ego is simply the end-product of the complex operations of all the cells, chemical transmissions and neural processes that go on in my brain. If that were so, it should in theory be possible to create just that consciousness with a computer - an artificial intelligence.
Well, now. Enough babbling, but I would be curious to know your thoughts.

Maybe it is/will be possible with computers the way they are now.
Who's to say that one of those mega computers from Big Blue hasn't already been given a consciousness and is being used to simulate life somewhere.
Maybe it has seen this topic and is considering it's answer.

Theres a great Divine Comedy lyric:
"Heaven and Hell Do Not Exist!"
(If you die, you do so at your own risk)

Well, if there were evidence to make believe that, fine, but I do not think that the writer of these lyrics was quite serious

However, eternal life would be real cool, but I have no reason to believe that I will ever become an immortal.

If you want more fun about this topic, go and watch the Matrix, with it in mind and get ready for a trip to the great questions about ourselfs
Welcome to the desert of the real.

Well, I thought about that, too. Not exactly in the context of matrix, but in that of the so called 'holodeck' of Start Trek TNG. If one would spend his/her entire life on the holodeck (but not knowing that it is all a virtual reality), and believing that he/she has lived a fulfilled life, and then finding out about the truth - what then? What if we would suddenly find out that this life of ours is just a fiction? Whoo! That gives me a lot to think about

@GedB: Nope, I have not seen this one yet. But I will when I get the chance.
@Kaeru Gaman: "absolutely... nothing... say it again..." - is that not a short phrase from War by Frankie?

Frankie? o_O
...it was an Edwin Starr Song...

Looked it up on wikipedia, and it says that the song was indeed first sung by Edwin Starr, but Franke (=Frankie Goes To Hollywood) covered it.

I do not think that time spent _questioning_ can be wasted time. Besides, the time spent for this thread is really infinitesimal.
