The picture above explains just an idea, you must not take it just as a real machine. It is an scheme, but not a plane of a built machine.
This one explain it better (but it is also a scheme):

Sorry the comments are in spanish but i explain here in english:
As you can see, the direction of the vectors of the magnetic currents (flows) of the magnetic field are not parallel neither perpendicular to the direction of the vectors of the gravitian currents (flows) of the gravitian field. I have calculated it, and i know that they can not be nor parallel neither perpendicular. However i still don't know the optimal exact angle that the magnetic and gravitian currents (flows) must have.
Perhaps the best way to test it is to use the american style, i.e. to build the artefact ;) instead to calculate so many things.

What's the purpose of the ferrofluid at the top?

It retains the other liquid, same as the ferrofluid part at the bottom.
The mission of both parts is to retain the liquid.

But will the water fall out upwards?

It is supposed that the water doesn't move and the floaters move upwards in the liquid side.
Anyway there is not sure it works because maybe the gravity force is in equilibrium with the force performed by the ferrofluid agains the movement of the floaters. :?
I'd like to test it for real.

I was thinking that this mov machine (even if I don't understand anything about it) thingy somehow is connected to your work.. I don't know.. Why are you asking that?
