The difference is not big, just some minor things like that Debian uses .deb packages and Red Hat based ones use .rpm packages, and there is a program named "alien" which can convert rpm to deb and vice versa, but I said that sentence only because I know just too many sources where you can get deb packages only (like dotdeb).

I just upgraded from a P4 3GHz to E6300 - I think it was a nice choice. For a while, I wondered which was better, going for E6300 or a D 945 (3.40Ghz 800 FSB 2x2MB Cache Dual Core). All I've read suggests it's more the whole package than just the CPU MHz processor rating, e.g. the E6300 can do 1000MHz FSB vs the P4 series (533/800MHz), so for that reason alone, I chose the E6300.
As for a monitor, I can recommend the Sony SDM-HS75P - it's the best picture I've seen (very deep blacks & contrast is excellent).

@mskuma: Good that you chose E6300, from what I read about the Pentium D processors, people say they are shit and even the best Pentium D is worse than the lowest Core 2 Duo (E6300).

Yes, the Pentium D was well avoided. Any AMD dual core will run much cooler and perform better. Core Duo is Intel's "catch-up" technology as they were getting a sound thrashing with their D line. Afaik Core Duo is a decent offering and a worthy competitor for AMD's excellent line of dual-core chips. But there are plenty of D's still out there to trap an unsuspecting consumer.

@thamarok: yeah I agree with you. I've only had it a couple of weeks, but it certainly 'feels' alot better than my old P4 3GHz machine.

If you want to feel it, open your CPU case and touch the processor while the computer is running
(It can be *hot*)
