Hmmm... I'm very pleased with my old Dells (Dimension 8200 and C610). They have been like two workhorses.

Same. I've owned a few Dells. Never an issue. But then I only buy their
laptops. Inspiron 8200 (2.4ghz Proc.), XPS M1210 (DC 2.16 Proc.) ..

I just bought a Gateway laptop.
What I found odd is that all of the laptops in the store had the "shiny" (reflects a lot of the light) LCDs.
I ask a, who looked like seasoned tech vet, what the deal was. He said it was a marketing thing. People tend to like the "shiny" over the other. Who would ever want a highly light reflecting into your eye's LCD is beyond me. But, I still walked out with it and I even sacraficed the resolution I have on my old laptop. This new one only goes 1280x800. Lucky I code 99% of my projects at or below 800x600.
Uhg.
ps. And don't get me going about Dell. I just went around and around with them this morning for a client of mine. What a pain the backside. If I told you exactly the run around you would need to give me 40 minutes of your time and then be prepared to laugh hard (as I and another business owner did while listening to her ask me to spell the "numbers" portion of my business's address).
*smacks forehead*
So, then she's getting upset because I started to laugh and not get upset and hangup. What a deal. Dell? Nah, something about the battery going boom and the tech support going dud... it just makes me want to laugh.

Nothing wrong with a good Dell. That's all I've owned for the last 10
years. I never liked their support. Until now, but only for the XPS.
They have a whole division that goes with the XPS warranty. I don't
even have to call them, I can open a chat window.
Here's something funny, this goes along with my new laptop. I was the
one that actually resolved a global issue for Dell.
You can find it here.

Nice.
Dell just cut the price on this one with free shipping. I am building a PC for a customer, and I actually considered buying this instead and selling the 19" LCD for $200, ending up with a hot PC for $350 out the door:

Nice! If you like Gateways...
I've always prefered to build my systems from hand picked parts, here's mine:
MB: ABit AN7 v1.0 with ABit's v1.9 BIOS
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton Core
PSU: Antec NeoPower 480W
RAM: 2 GB as matched pair of Corsair 1 GB XMS Pro PC3200 DDR400
Video: Leadtek A400 GT TDH (GeForce 6800 GT, 256 MB)
PCI card: Adaptec A2903 SCSI (for UMAX Astra 1220S scanner)
Hard Drives: Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 8 MB Cache ATA100 (80 GB and 160 GB)
CD Drives: ASUS DVD-E616A2 & DRW-1608P3S
CPU Cooling: Vantec AeroFlow VA4-C7040 HSF
Chipset Cooling: Titan Copper VGA Cooler Kit - TTC-CUV2AB/RHS(DIY)
Case Cooling: 2 Antec All Clear Pro Case Fans (80mm intake, 120mm exhaust)
Case: CoolerMaster Centurion 5
OS: Windows XP Home with SP2
Probably won't beat some of the other system's described in this thread, but I don't care, I'm very happy with it!

As long as you're happy with the machine you bought you shouldn't worry what other people think.
If you wait to get the best thats out there then you will never one!

Yes, it's not that great. I'm actually looking at some possibilities today. Trying to stay under $150 or so.

If you wanna keep your old monitor then I would build my own machine. Then you get the hardware you want, and need, instead of any bulk crap.
and you can buy something cheap if you are short of cash then you can save up some money for later

I looked at some GeForce 7800GS based cards that were available for AGP, but they need so much power I'd have to replace my power supply too.
Then I found some benchmark comparisons between the 6800GT I currently have and the 7800GS I was looking at. I wouldn't see anything better than a 10% improvement in performance, so I decided not to upgrade. The cost wasn't worth the minimal performance increase I'd see.

I'd go for a new mobo with sli that supports pci-e.
