@Inf0Byt3: Glad it worked. This is actually the best way by keeping it confined to your own home folder. So upgrades and such don't knock out any global preferences.

I'm dumb, I know, but gadget examples don't compile... How do I install GTK? I downloaded gtk+-2[1].8.16 (and all its dependencies). Where should I unpack it and what next?

That sounds right, did you try it?

Hmm isn't Mepis debain based the you could just open the commandline an type "apt-get install libgtk1.2-dev" and "apt-get install libgtk2.0-dev" in this case rpm won't work since debian doesn't use rpm packages....
EDIT: Yeah Wikipedia says that Mepis is Debian absed so the above should work maybe you also have a graphical Package Manager such as Synaptec you could use this too

Rpm packages work, synaptyc packager is installed, but the package doesn't work

.
I really don't like linux (at least the first impression is not too good for a newbie) . It's too obfuscated! I mean for one installation you need n packages, but you cannot install them because you need other n packages (dependencies), etc. I'll install ARClinux and try it, I have the resources CD here, maybe it'll work better.

Synaptic is very good it is what I use under ubuntu just search for libgtk and install the packages ending with -dev that should work...

Don't install another Linux before you testedc the one you have the Debian way of installing packages is the easiest you can get use Synaptec, it clears all the Dependencies for you the problem is not that the package was wrong but you tried it the wrong way you tried a rpm based package but rpm is not the debian way and so it's not the Mepis way too

On a side note: When I once tried to install sdl-devel on Red Hat it refused the package with the message: This package requires sdl-devel.

LOL! So it's not that I don't like Linux, but this Open Source way has generated a mess around all this distros and all this packages. I hate to say this but that's why M$ wins ground. They do it with style. You don't need all that stuff to make something work. You just run it

.
@Nik
I'll try that, thanks. BTW, ArcLinux sucks. Today switching to UBUNTU
I think I'll get my computer broken by the end of the week

What you mention is the point why I will buy an Intel Mac in July one of the nice 20" iMacs maybe even a better one if the sell something better for under 2000 € for students by then. The Macs also look much better than windows PCs and they have the bash I fell in love now that I am using Linux 90% of the time... and all the nice other Unix stuff Mac OS X even has a build in X Server so I can have the X Windows from my Linux box right on the Mac as if it runs there^^
I'm just now downloading Nexenta it's Debian based GNU/OpenSolaris system that could be a really heavy mixture so I have to try the LiveCD, another funny thing to do is running Damn Small Linux in QEmu or as Live CD haven't got VMWare yet but maybe I will buy the OS X Version for my Intel Mac when it's out (they said that they have running versions in their lab and if they don't sell it I will use Paralells Workstation)

Yes, i think a Mac will be the right choice. It looks pretty good, and I never heared nobody complaining about it. About Linux, do you have a recomendation for me? What should I install? I was thinking about UBUNTU... Is there any Linux distro that comes with all packages or is easyer to run PB on? I'm tired of trying/installing
