I have my girlfriends busted 256mb mp3 player. Doesnt play MP3s anymore but it can still be read as a data drive. =)
I am making it outside by using the USB flash memory for two years.
The memory is not good in Kingston, and my recommendation is TrueFFS
type of M-System. It is a recommendation by the business of Japan.
Reliability is different.
