i use ie a lot cos im on dialup and it kills my connection if i dont use ie...
but a program i reccomend is spywareblaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html it stops a lot of spyware being installed
i also use opera (especially portable opera
)

I've found spyware detectors more trouble than there worth.
The best approach is to get to know you computer using the tools from
www.sysinternals.com. Get to know every process and service.
