i use ie a lot cos im on dialup and it kills my connection if i dont use ie...
but a program i reccomend is spywareblaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html it stops a lot of spyware being installed

i also use opera (especially portable opera

I've found spyware detectors more trouble than there worth.

The best approach is to get to know you computer using the tools from www.sysinternals.com. Get to know every process and service.
