1Mbit here - too far from an exchange to get higher. BT decided to sell the local exchange to a housing development. This is when they knew broadband was on its way!

I know people with 512kbit just down the road from me.

By sister cannot even get broadband - her exchange is a "modern" one with some optical connections along the way to her house. BT say they will not be updating the exchange that she is on.

In HK they are supposed to have 1Gbit now!

Anyone know what its like in France, we plan to move there one day...

1 GB sounds sweet.
Question really is, is that speed needed? Deffenantly NOT for surfing though hehehe

Believe me, once you humans accomplish transporter technology, you'll realize that 1G is child's play. On Dovak 7 we have been using 30 TB for some time now and we still crave more...
