Thanks for reaffirming my point. It's 87 meg now...

I'm with TPG in Sydney with ADSL. I used to be on their 256k download plan
for unlimited data at $50/month, but recently upgraded to 1500k download for
the same price but a limit of 20 GB per month, then choked to just 64k speed.
This may not seem like much data, but I'm not actually a heavy net user: my
currently monthly usage is only at 4.7 GB and my monthly billing cycle ends
on the 9th (only six more days away). So it's basically unlimited for me.

I don't agree... No matter how you try and spin it...Brice Manuel wrote:Nice to know the forums will be undergoing DoS attacks by ceratin users![]()
I agree with Paul at IBasic in permanently banning people who do such things and turning them in to their ISP and letting the datacenter who hosts the forums take whatever legal action they can against these people.
Very abusive, mean and selfish behavior no matter how you try and spin it.

@Brice. Ease up, dude. You'll notice we had a conversation whilst that was going on. Now if Techjunkie releases his bots, then you can wet your pants.
(Bet he takes that seriously. Sorry Techjunkie, I just ruined your rep. Or made it ...)

This is an interesting (and scary!) quote from Paul in Brice's link:

Their forums are a bit smaller but not massively. It would make a nice PB project for someone (not me) to write an offline browser that works directly from the database file, includes searching, and renders the content in a readable manner. A 62 meg backup + 100k PB program would definitely fit on a CDPaul wrote:The database for the forums is only 62MB or so. But the grabber that someone executed today downloaded 1.12GB worth of html pages because they were following every link in the topics.

Is it a traffic limit?

I just noticed that (the registered version of) SurfOffline lets you export the
saved web site as a single CHM file, which is a nice option. I don't really like
the way WinHTTrack works. Sometimes it's worth paying for something just
to get a job done professionally and simply. I mean, GPL apps can be good,
but WinHTTrack feels too advanced/cumbersome for my liking, even if it is
superior in some ways. Superiority doesn't always mean easy to use.

Thats what all the script-kiddies say when they are DoSing a site, lol. However, it is NOT public. It is a private web site owned and maintained by Fred and he provides free access for his users. I don't think he expects his users to abuse his services and make him pay more $$ for bandwidth when he shouldn't have to.I don't agree... No matter how you try and spin it... The stuff is public
The off-line readers, site snaggers are just as bad on sites as what the download managers are. Sad in a way, because forums (if used properly) hardly take up any bandwidth compared to product downloads.Their forums are a bit smaller but not massively.
Re traffic limit. I am assuming this is so.
And as MrMat said, the bloat comes from all the junk around the actual posts, banners, etc.
A client spider that only took the posts (which are easily identified) and didn't chase links inside the posts would cut it down a bit. But still some bloat.
Now a serverside php script that just delivered up the posts would be neat. I wonder if they allow that?
As to this Paul of Ibasic fellow, why does he keep cropping up here? Next we know he'll be sending messages saying he is short of cash again ...
This is Fred of PureBasic territory and Fred has balls.

Well, that's exactly what I said when Mosaic first came along... WHAT?!?! Are they going to use the bandwidth for graphics?!? What a waste!!Brice Manuel wrote:Thats what all the script-kiddies say when they are DoSing a site, lol. However, it is NOT public. The couple of 100 megs I'm going to DL from the forum is nothing - and it is public information? or? everyone on the Internet can watch it, or? Anyway - I'm going to use it for personal use and not sell it...
I really hope you have set your Temporary Internet files to zero bytes - or, in your opinion it's a crime to store the information local...

MEDUSA is a real nice app for doing this stuff!
Btw i think the CD idea is good. OR providing a zipped file too!
However i dunno why do you want to have it offline? In case it someday dissapeared?

For me, I have three main reasons:
(1) In case my ISP is down due to technical difficulties (happened once).
(2) When I'm coding at a friend's place (he doesn't have net access).
(3) When I'm at work (they monitor which sites I visit).
And finally (not for me, but a good reason anyway):
(4) For viewing on your laptop on the bus if you don't have WiFi.
