Apple moves to Intel ?!?

Everything else that doesn't fall into one of the other PB categories.

It seems to be confirmed by Steve Jobs, the intel CPU will be used for lowend mac starting to 2006. I have to admit that it's very disappointing, we put a lot of work into the PowerPC code generation for PureBasic and all this work will be obsolete in a few months..

About the libraries, on linux most of libs are in C (some are still in x86 asm like linkedlist, random, some misc functions) and on MacOS all libraries are in C (fortunately regarding this announce..). We will update the web site in regards to this fact as it's kind of erronous information now.

Fred,

although the OS-count remains three, there's one processor architecture less to target, so this should result in some workload reduction.
Perhaps a good time to think about targetting PocketPC's ?
cheers,

Is he stupid enough to announce to the world that in 12-18 months the Mac will be x86 powered, knowing by doing so he'll kill mac sales until then?
Yup, DoubleDutch is right, Jobs is madder than a Frenchman wearing underpants on his head

How stupid is this anouncement !
So everybody planning to buy a mac won't do it because they know it'll be outdated next year :D
They have a strange marketing way of doing anouncement...

The Developer Transition Kit is available starting today for $999 to all Apple Developer Connection Select and Premier members.
A thousand dollars, and then only for Developer Connection members!

Say what you like about Microsoft, but at least the .Net framework was available as a free download.

One thing Microsoft has always recognised is the importance of the small, independant software developer. Apple don't seem to consider them as important.

I wonder why they made the announcement just now (its seems to be planned since 5 years). And what about the famous CELL processor which is PPC based and powers the nextgen video console (XBox, PS3) ? Well, it should have some secret infos around all this

Damn, I really hoped this all were just rumors... :(

What will the future of Apple be now?
Did all major developers already follow the "Universal-Binary-Guidelines"?
Will "Rosetta" be more than just a not-too-good-working emulator?

:?

I'm shaken...
Good programmers don't comment their code. It was hard to write, should be hard to read.

Jobs must be entirely mad!

Anyone checked the if the share price of Apple went up or down?

The future for both speed and cost does appear to be with the powerpc based cpus like the Cell.

Its a crazy move.

Fred: You should have done an ARM version for the PocketPC and Palm...

PocketPC OS calles are very similar/same as windows and devkits are free.

Last Friday at the opening AAPL dropped from a bit over $ 40,00 to around $ 38,20. A substantial opening gap indeed. Subsequently, further ground was lost. The close today was $ 37,92

Is AAPL going south?

Fred: Sony, Toshiba and IBM are very serious about the CELL processor. According to some experts in the area it will probabily be the processor to use in the not to distant future. Way more powerful than anything Intel/AMD could dream of doing to the x86. It will also be much cheaper to manufacture because of economies of scale. As you noted its also compatible with most PowerPC code. So I don't think you have really wasted any time with the PowerPC version.

An ARM version would be nice though... ;)
