Have you installed the DX SDK at anytime and have the debug version of DX runtime installed ? it could be your sound card too, maybe it does not have a hardware buffer on it and being a legacy card it could be slowing down the rest of your hardware accelerated system ... I used to have problems with my old 400 MHZ machine with sound blaster 64 ... it would cause these sorta problems, the card was ISA.

Also in debug version of runtime, DX adds a crackle noise in empty sound, so you know a sound is empty and should be terminated, have you noticed any peculiar noises while playing games like crackling and such ?

@CodeMonger: No I never installed the DirectX SDK. My sound card is a PCI Aureal MX300. That card has a couple of special issues, the most important being that the company went bye bye, so there is no more support.

I found many who had the same problems that I had :

1- When playing a game, the sound would cut off after a while never to return until reboot (in XP and 2000).

2- Crackling sound in EVERY games (don't know how I put up with this one for so long :( )

Solution to 1: use a program called wpcredit/wpcrset to set the value FF to the registry 40 on the sound card and reboot. That worked fine.

Solution to 2: This one was the biggie because there are so many reasons that can provoke crakling sound. Even if my card is PCI some said that it was a PCI timing problem, the card not being fast enough. I tried patches wich were supposed to fix this but to no avail.

Then I read a post saying that if there is to much devices on the same IRQ as the graphic or the sound card, it can cause problems on some PCs. So I d/l SiSoft Sandra to do a quick check. There was at least seven sofware and hardware devices on IRQ 9 including my graphic and sound card. So I managed like I said in earlier post so my sound card was all alone on IRQ 9 and my graphic card is only sharing with one of my network cards.

And for the first time since I have XP installed, I HAVE NO MORE CRACKLING IN GAMES!!!!! :) :) :) Sorry to yell but I wanted to share the emotion at that time.
