iirc tolkien was a languist, and originally conceived the idea based on different languages and and their impact on a world, that combined with some children stories turned out to be a bestseller...

although people's opinion may differ on the details, and even tolkien himself could be quite... vague :-)

try the silmarillion (?) for more details on the history of lotr...

the books were awsome but the movies were not as detailed but why would any them think they were horrible?
i thought they were cool but i'm not one of those lotr fanatics running around with elven cloaks on them...

I think the movies and the book are ok, but I know lots of people that don't like them, there's no such unanimity about that (apart from the ¿11? awards).

try Wagner

Forget Tolkien: Listen to Wagner's ring cycle. Great sub-plots and some of the world's best music!

o_0 ... i hope that post was a joke, cause i don't see how anyone who like's thier Sci-Fi/Fantasy can like the bilge from those writers.
They're more like... Sci-Fi/Fantasy for dummies.

the complete over saturation of the market with just piss poor writers is the whole reason I don't tend to sit down and read novels anymore cept for Kevin J Andersons latest releases and Terry Prattchets.

Mom always says when I ask her how she can read 'Terry Brooks' is it's better than not reading; But quite frankly where's the joy in actually sitting down and taking the time to read a book if your not going to enjoy it. It's like most women i know will pick up a book and read it within a day or two, and then be onto the next book; but again what's the point? how much are you actually taking in about what the book is about if you don't sit down and actually read it.

The only time i read as fast as my other half is like when i'm reading something I don't particularly want to, so i'll scan read it taking in the information I need to.

LOTR was a good book, talk to some nerds it was the greatest book of all time; but usually thats some personal called Gandelf414871@AOL.com.
I find it funny you tell kids that LOTR wasn't original a single book it was three (hense the 3 films) and they won't believe you...
technically 4 if you include The Hobbit, 5 with that other one i can't remember atm.

You ever been in a room where nerds & geeks are discussing 'why the LOTR movies were so bad'? (yeah why, not if lol else your not a true nerd aparently)
It's quite funny cause you'd hear things like...

"Well they took such'n'such river which in the book was an arduas journey that took them several weeks, but in the movie they hop on a boat and are there within 2minutes!"
standing there is was like

"the movie is three hours long WITH the editing done in it... there is NO sodding why i'd sit through a 5hr version of the hobbits floating down a river just for 'realism' means!"

though i must admit something i missed when i watched the first through was, when the hobbits are starting out from the shire and there's that scene with them walking across the field... in the background you see a LandRover drive across the scene. hehee
didn't notice it the first time but after i was told i did.

It's the same though with Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back (god i love that movie) ... well Luke and R2 are on that planet with Yoda, and like R2 falls into the swap and is like "tum-ti-dum" going through it.
As he gets dragged underwater he beeps then goes...
'Uhggh. Oh... OH-NOOOOOOOOOOOO!" but still in a kinda robotic voice.
When i first noticed i rewound the tape just to make sure it wasn't the 3 beers lol but it's in there.

Don't think that was a loss of continuity or something, but is pretty cool :)

To drift a little away from the sci-fantasy towards the sci-fiction, two great authors are I.Asimov and A.C.Clarke. Did anyone enjoy the Foundation & Empire books?

Heh, when compared to the LOTR series, the ones I listed actually make you think and have applications to real life.. can't say that about the "LOTR". Actually, let me put it this way. If I ever need fire kindle, I'll use the LOTR books :) And yes, I've been reading them day and night for the last two days :D (including today).
