Dual Boot and file transfers

Post by Dare2 »

I am more than a newbie with linux, so forgive the simplicity of these Q's. :)

I have installed Fedora Core on an old 40gig disk and made my unit dual boot. I now need to get stuff from the windows disk to the linux disk.

I assume it could be done via burning CDs, but prefer not. Another way would be upload/download except I need to get online with linux and one of the things I need to get across is BPALOGIN so I can connect via my ISP.

Is there any windows software that would allow accessing the linux HD? Or vice versa, so once I get it onto the linux disk I can access the windows disk?

Also, linux isn't linux, it seems. ??

As soon as I went looking for executables it appeared that many were restricted to certain linux flavours. Is this correct? (Although most have source so could be rebuilt for a particular flavour, I guess.)

Thanks.

With SUSE Linux i do the following:

On the desktop with RMB i create a new drive shortcut, then in the options i assign it to my windows disk...

hd0, hd1, etc....

With SUSE Fat32 partitions are immediatly available, so i have no need to burn cds!

In Linux, you can access to windows disk in:
/mnt directory (normally) or
/windows directory
But, if windows partition is NTFS, you can only read it, not write.

In Windows you can use:
Explore2fx to access ext2 filesystem. Perhaps there are another utilities for other filesystems.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/ and do a search for "mounting fat32 partition" or google it.

You could also reduce a partition a bit, create a new one & format it as FAT32, so both OS can access it r/w.

Hi everyone.

Thank you!

I'll try these things this weekend and see what suits me best. (More accurately, see what I can actually manage to get going).
