Paying For Updates

Post by gmatthews »

All,

I would like to see the developer of PureBasic start charging an update fee for ALL major Point releases (ie 4,5, etc) and only allowing you free access to intermediate releases/bugfixes for free (ie if you purchased version 3.0 you can have free upgrades all the way up to 3.99).

Why?

I am a professional developer (C/C++, Visual Basic) and find Purebasic to be easy to use and extend and whilst not without its faults it makes Product development a breeze.

I find it hard to believe that the developers can carry on with lifetime free updates and I would rather pay for point releases in the knowledge that it allows the potential for the company/developers to expand and reinvest the money in improving this product.

Lets face 60Euros per point release is nothing.
I have spent over £1,500 on Microsoft Development Kits and find myself preferring Purebasic. Enough said.

I await your replies.

i would like not to pay for updates. I have been promised free lifetime updates, and that one of the reasons i bought PB.
The reason is i simply cant afford it. Fred and the team is really great, i
would rather see a method of supporting PB, i mean like when you have a little money you can choose to give it to PB team.
But i would absolutely hate if it changes so i need to pay for major updates. Microsoft does it, and that does not mean its right. Rather it proves its wrong

I could say yes to a donation possibility.

Thats just my 2 cents...

Buy another licences if you want to support the developer ;-)

Another way of supporting him: I for example told other programmers about PB and at least 2 of them bought it.

Welcome to the fantastic world of PureBasic, where greed is not an issue! ;)

Seriously, having to pay for something over and over and over isn't required
to keep a product afloat. Many free apps exist with no payment whatsoever
(look at Firefox, OpenOffice, etc) because they are great apps. PureBasic is
also a great app but gets one payment from every registered user, so what's
the problem? It's making money for the author and he's happy, so chill out
and relax. As stated by others, you can always re-register if you want to.

sure... :)

Indeed. And PB is not free, but requires a one time payment. But you can if you want to buy a license more.

not that im mad at you for suggesting it. because you are coming from the greedy MS enviroment, and you maybe didnt know about nice people as PB developers, you are hereby forgiven

I love programing, but I just do it for fun. I do it in my own free time.

@gmatthews:: As it has been said, make a donation, or even better pay the licence for those that can't afford it, ie: students, poor people in the 3rd world.

gmatthews, I see what you mean. But everyone who has already purchased their PB license have been promised free lifetime upgrades and that can't change. I mean on the legal side.

Right before I found PB I bought a license for iBasic. The next day I found out about PB and boy did I regret buying the iBasic license. Not because it was a bad language, but just because PB is so much better.

If I could afford it, I would love to help further the development of PB and the growth of Fantaisie Software. But I can't, but I would love to help in any other way.

Fred, need a Norwegian reseller? ;)
