1. I plugged my digital camera in the computer, waited 5 seconds, and - wosh - there was the camera icon onto the Linux - desktop! I wonder where's the problem...

2. I set up the network connection between a Linux and a Windows. Linux recogniced the Windows-System immediately, Windows recogniced the Linux system some tricks later (well, nobody is perfect ;-))

3. Well, Windows XP doesn't crash too often - but the sh* f* explorer likes to crash if I simply try to open a folder.

I have to agree with scurrier.

"... some or all of these points especially the open source BS cause there will never be great programs for Linux if developers are told they don’t own there software they wrote..."

This is America (at least where I live) and here it is customary to exploit whoever, whenever you can. Not my personal philosophy but, the American standard nonetheless. If Linux does not fix the problems (and they wont because you can't exploit what is not owned) then they will never take the lead over Microsoft. Exploitation rules this country. Simply look at the facts and see where selling got Bill Gates:

Any hope that Linux will surpass Microsoft in the marketplace is like thinking Disney World would have to fold just because Walt died. Tight reins are the thing that will keep these giants on top forever. At least until, well after your great grandchildren are dead and burried. Even more unlikely at that point I suspect because we've entered the computer age and that is the tool they both use to further secure those reins each minute of every day.

@Randy Walker and @scurrier:

Sorry guys you're way wrong its already happening. It is where M$ wouldn't whip out cheap tricks. Example would be the SCO crap. They said to SCO here is 30 mill now go make trouble for IBM, who embraces Linux. Furthermore, I have many years of expiriance with both windows and linux. Linux is far less trouble some. I've worked for the largest web hosting company in the world, trust me a good 80% would agree without a second thought expecially the sysadmins. Death to M$! The only thing good about M$ is that its crappy software breaks down alot and I make alot of money fixing it! Oh one more thing I've also worked for my local county school system and I've spent alot of time fixing stuff. I worked IT for them and believe me anyone that doesn't know windows is crap is either ignorant or dumb.

It does, but ignorance isn't nessecarily bad. It just means you have things to learn and discover.

So is a person who posts, edits their post, and still manages to produce one of the most grammar-free and improperly punctuated pieces of drivel ever written.

So much for 'freedom of speech'. How interesting that your single experience defines the fact of the matter. My personal experience is as good as 100% opposite to yours (in terms of the Windows Vs. *nix debate).

I think Linux has it's place. I think Windows has it's place. I just happen to think Windows has more places.

My opinion is my opinion. So is yours. It's not fact, so don't try to pass it off this way.

Question here:

If a programmer/designer/etc works on Unix/Linux based systems, that means they are good, right? According to what we read here. If they then get a job with MS, does that mean they are now technically deficient?

Or vice versa?

Opinion here:

I think people jump up and down on the products because they dislike the corporation or ethos behind them, and co-incidentally smear the abilities of some very clever people currently working in that camp.

The products themselves and the directions they take are as much controlled by the philosophies and organisations behind them as by the people working on them.

All (multiple *nixes and windows*) have problems and all are very good at what they do/offer.

Windows has and holds such a significant share of the marketplace because of ease of use for the peeps who would rather be doctors or police or clerks than programmers, etc. And these people outnumber computer gurus.

*nixs are so strong in their niche (control over computer environment, etc) and suit people who would rather do this than learn how to appendectomise themselves.

One for the general public, one for the specialists.

:)

PS: I still hope something comes in from nowhere, something that is neither *nix nor windows based or influenced, and creams them both. Perhaps it will happen, after all MS did it to IBM when IBM was the big bad giant.
