WebGadget based on Edge rather than IE
Does this mean a WebGadget based on Edge could be a possibility?

I don't think so. You can only enable IE11 using the Windows Registry.
It might be possible to create your own control on WebView2.

It would be good to move beyond any version of IE so we can use nice new HTML5 features like css grid
