XUbuntu or Linux Mint is a good choice

Old bugs good, new bugs bad! Updates are evil: might fix old bugs and introduce no new ones.

Linux Mint 12 + Gnome-Shell --> This what I have on my both (PC and Notebook) computers.
But if you like the Gnome 2 feel, Linux Mint 12 with MATE will be your choice.
Another choice it's Linux Mint 12 with Cinnamon, a rebuilt of Gnome 2 style with Gnome 3 elements. Look promising but currently in development.

Hi,
i used Ubuntu until Unity had been released. But i hate the minimalistic scrollbars as well as the global menu. Two no-goes which let me switch to Fedora with Gnome 3 desktop. Against most other people i love the design and the desktop features. I do not like KDE so much so i would always prefer GTK/Gnome.
Best regards
Uwe

Re: what would you preffer
Ubuntu 11.10
I'm running KDE 4.73 looks great but is a bit slow on my system but it would probably be fine on a multi core
but it's not that useable as PB's ide crashes though 4.51 ide works.
If your on ubuntu you can install the other desktops
sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop
or
sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop
