I guess I'm a bit strange, by the time He-Man and Thundercats came out and were popular, I in my mid to late twenties and didn't watch cortoons of any kind, discovered He-Man and later the Thundercats while flipping through channels looking for something to watch. To this day I still don't know what made me stop and watch those two shows. I grew to really like He-Man, but the Thundercats, though good, never got my interest like He-Man did.

And She-Ra, a spin-off of He-Man, was crap, I only saw two or three episodes of that show. I hope it died a merciful and quick death.

And isn't it strange how an avatar has managed to hijack this thread? Could it be that nobody wanted to talk about Apple in the first place?

LOL, 80's cartoons must be a better topic then apple. Back off topic, I wish they would rerun all 80's tv. Like "You can't do that on television", "USA Express", and so many more.

I just saw this in the product description for a DVD collection of 60s cartoons on Amazon and thought it rather interesting.

While these cartoons are great fun for the adult set, it's interesting that what was considered kids' entertainment in the 1960's is now deemed unsuitable for children due to things like excessive cartoon violence, dishonesty, animal cruelty, and sexist and chauvinistic behavior.

I found it interesting because TV shows today have more violence and other bad behavior than TV shows in the 60s ever did and yet the author of the description appeared to think it was the other way around.

I think the last, really good cartoons to come out of the U.S Market were shows like Robotech (butchered source material as it may be) and then Exo-Squad in the 90's. Man I loved Exo-Squad, I wish they got to finish it before being canceled.


They had the Toy Lines and Models and everyting, but the shows did have real substance and acting to them that most US viewers wouldn't see again until they discovered Anime

While writing a season's worth of shows, the writers have no idea if there'll be a another season or not so they write assuming there will be another season and then the show gets canceled leaving the story unfinished.

Every once in a while a show's staff will learn that their show has been canceled early enough that they can write the season so that it can lead up to a series finale. Or in the case of a show that has no ongoing story they can write a an episode to end the series like they did with McGyver.

Agreed, though I think that is changing as anime becomes more "mainstream"...

It's true, things get dumbed down for the Mainstream. Plus you can only do an idea so many times before it wears off.. Granted I still like to watch Gundam more for the action (could do without the cheesy one liners pilots spout off when launching/fighting rivals though).

There are still some really good gems to be found out there, even in the overdone genres. Sometimes in a sea of crap you find a jewel.

It was canceled because the mainstream American TV audience was either too stupid to comprehend and appreciate that the show was a satire of the American TV broadcasting industry or if they did get it, they didn't appreciate it. I thought it was a great show, when the series was finally released on DVD I bought it.

I'm sure there are lots of other examples of excellent TV programming that didn't make it because most of the TV audience wants dunbed down crap that turns their brains to mush....

That's pretty much a description of what all of TV is, 99.99% crap with a few gems thrown in.

I think a lot of the original film was spliced and re-shot with American actors as a pre-runner of the series which was shown in America.

If you haven't seen the original film try and track it down, it was very cool.

I have the original version. In it Briyce Lynch is a lot "darker" (evil) than he was in the US version and you're right, I think the show might have done better over here if they hadn't made the changes they did and just followed the original.

It was only available on VHS video cassette, I successfuly copied it to DVD before getting rid of my video recorder.

If you like Anime, I recommend a series called "Planetes". It's a couple years old, but it was a really well done show. I don't know that I could do a real good job with a synopsis but it really had me sucked in. Glad I didn't have to wait between episodes because I had them all.


It follow a core group of people that work within the "Debris Section" of a space-based company. A lot of the events take place on a station, with spacewalks inside its general vicinity, and also on Luna (the moon) in a city / hospital setting.

It's kind of a mish-mash of Humor, Slice of Life, Terrorism/Sociopolitical issues, Love/Relationships, and of course Space Exploration itself with a little philosophy thrown in here and there. Does suffer from some cliche's and cheesey characters, but it was a great, well-rounded series that had a real interesting story to tell about Humanity in the future.

As usual you can probably find plenty of Subbed/Dubbed clips or episodes on Youtube or wherever.. But I recommend buying it and watching it in full 1080p. It looked great. I thought the English dub was done quite well.

I used to religiously watch "You can't do that on television" and crack up over the 'cook' barf.
