I have just clean installed WinXP Home and i have a strange little 'feature'.
I have firewall and ADSL connection shortcuts placed in my startup folder to start on boot up.
When ever i start the PC up all works fine and boots normally, BUT the startup folder programs (firewall, ADSL) take a few MINUTES to actually start! any ideas why this is? In my old installation they started immediately as the PC opened windows.
(Sometimes windows winds me up! it took nearly an hour to finally remove messenger!)

It could be it's trying to start the firewall & dsl at the same time and it's getting confused by those 2...
Try one at the time...
Check to see if the internal firewall is disconected...
Turn off QOS (only works with MSSQL) no other software uses it...
Get kerio personall firewall or tiny personal for free... They start has a service...
To remove messanger: Open it up, at options tab uncheck "Start with windows"
and close it...
Delete the directory...

This is how i got rid of messenger:
Edit the c:\windows\inf\sysoc.inf. Look for the line starting with "msmsgs" and remove "hide," from the end of this line. Now goto Control Panel -> Add/Remove -> Windows Components. Windows Messenger should now be listed with a small grey diamond icon next to it, uninstall this one.

I think that you better get if both are giving the headache or just one, then put only one in the startup folder and start the PC then delete it and put the other and check.
Did you other installation was XP too?
Try going to Control Panel, then system, then advanced options, then the option that is for visual effects, memory and virtual memory, and there in the advanced tab you could work it out, i think...

yeah the other installation was the same (XP Home) and i always knock off all the eye candy from XP, i like classic looks and take off all shadows and skins.
I have also tried putting one shortcut in the start folder at a time and it still takes ages to load.
