Question about AVG free

Post by Inf0Byt3 »

Hmm, i am considering creating some shareware programs and i have some questions about the AVG license... Can I use their free version if i sell my software? What the heck does commercial use means for them? If anybody got any time to tell me if it's ok to use it, it's much appreciated...

BTW, are there any free av's for programmers who sell software?

If I read them right, "commercial use" to them means selling computers and bundling their software with them as a bonus, or any form of reselling or redistributing their free software. It doesn't matter what you're doing on the computer you're installing it on, developing software for sale or not, they don't care. Basically they want you downloading and using AVG Free for your personal use and for no other purpose.

Oh, i see... I allways wanted to ask this because i want to be in legality with all my software :). It became confusing since i read this about AVAST on their website and Grisoft has a very close license agreement to this...
avast! 4 Home Edition is a full-featured antivirus package designed exclusively for home users and non-commercial use. Both of these conditions should be met!

...

avast! 4 Home Edition can only be used by home users that do NOT use their computer for profit
Thank you for the quick answer :).

It seems that Grisoft doesn't like this... My worst fears have become true. It seems that commercial refferes to anything that has to do with money, including company, buisness, anything. Sof if anybody uses this and makes commercial software, he/she could breach AVG's license :x .

Well you're absolutely right but I feel a bit bad about this... I installed Comodo AntiviruSpyware (it sux a bit and it finds nothing, not even the test files i have here) but hey, it's better than nothing (not) and i love the way it hogs my CPU :P.

[Edit]
Ok, uninstalled that too. It's a cpu killer!

AVG

I used to use AVG but recently kept getting a popup that it was no longer going to be free. So removed it and switched to Avast (along with AdAware and SpyBot).

I've had no such popups with AVG.

Mind you I've only been using it a while since falling out with McAffee over their update model which forces me to purchase the full version every two years. I don't mind paying a subscription, but paying for the software again and again...

sh*t, not even MS do that. MS Word 97 might be out of date now, but there's nothing stopping me using it if I don't want to upgrade! When McAffee prevent you from downloading the new dat files because the software version is 2 years old...

Grrrr.... it's a form of flaming blackmail!

Rant over! :)

What about http://www.antivir.com/ ? I haven't read their license but it might be the best free AV program.

Well yeah, that's the best in its category AFAIK, but I guess the "commercial" stuff applies to it too so for the moment i'll stick with PCTools AV (until I get some budget for AV). It uses way too mcuh memory but PCTools guys said they'll minimize the footprint soon.

I've been using AVG free for years and have never had a virus that it didn't find and erradicate and no pop ups about having to pay for it.

Read it again - it's version 7.1 that isn't going to be supported anymore. Upgrade to version 7.5 free and you don't have any popups more... :)

I think AVG is one of the best Antivirus programs out there, haven't had any problems with viruses since I started using it - It's incredible that it is free. I would be happy to pay a couple of bucks for it.

As complement I run a couple off free online-scans once a month, for example Trend Housecall.

I used to use AVG free and really liked it but eventually switched to Avast Home edition because AVG free had one feature I couldn't turn off that caused problems for me.

With my vision problems I tend to be a slow reader and AVG had an automatic time-out on its alert dialogs that you couldn't adjust or turn off. The problem for me was that the time-out was too short for me to be able to read the entire message.
