> Why suddently all this talk about paying more?
Relax -- there's no plans for paying for updates. New members on these
forums should use the Search function before rocking the boat. This topic
has been done over and over and over, and quite frankly, it's had its day.

Yeahhh! If your Bill Gates. 8O I guess it is... "nothing".gmatthews wrote:All,
Lets face 60Euros per point release is nothing.
Some people in this world don't see others as pure commodity. That is to say, some people in this world recognise the value of "helping each other", to make the world a better place.
Hang the freeware programmers... they have a heart!

That covers that side of the fence. Now for those who balk at the thought of paying for updates. I have one point to make, at least for those who claim to enjoy PureBasic as mearly a fun passtime, if nothing else. Do you enjoy your cable TV? Do you enjoy the annual carnival? Do you enjoy your vacations? Your regular visits to the theater? Your movie rentals. Any of your recreational activities? What do you pay for these "fun" pastimes and do they bring you any monitary return? Add any one item up over the course of a year and tell me; what do you spend?
You don't tip the waitress once and expect the same service with a smile without a tip thereafter... do you? Something to consider. People don't make return trips to a place where they are not appreciated. I don't have to know Fred to know he would not continue if not for the appreciation you have shown. You paid Fred and you got what he offered. He was gracious enough to offer "any" future updates free. He didn't have to do that and another thing to consider, he is under NO LEGAL OBLIGATION to continue those updates - - he can simply close down shop and I can promise you, he would not be the first to do so. People like to know their efforts are appreciated so if you really enjoy it, tell him so. He may even take your interests closer to heart and aim harder at the targets you propose. To some, it is enough to say thanks, and that may get you your next cup of coffee at the dinner without a tip but, like the saying goes; put you money where your mouth is. If you do chose to "tip" Fred once in a while, he will no doubt take your gesture to be genuine.
The same could be said of any "demands" you think you should be entitled to. Fred met his promise to you the moment you completed your 1st download. While he did promise his updates to be free, he did NOT promise their would be any updates. The fact that there have been updates is a credit to the acknowledgement you have given him thus far. You have the choice to honor his efforts you claim to enjoy, or you could jsut look the gift horse in the mouth.
I'm not saying pay for updates. I am saying it is never in your best interest to take anyone for granted. The bottom line is he owe's none of you anything, legally or ethically.
Now 'nough said.

I said 'nough said but it's not enough. Many people here have been generous in helping me and each other. I am especially grateful to all those who have helped me. My migration project (GFA to PureBasic) is nearly complete and all things considered, has gone very well and I have many of you to thank.
Mostly I want to thank Fred and his main contributors for their efforts. PureBasic is a great product, highly underpriced I think and exremely powerfull. Not for the sake of the extra license but to affirm my appreciation, I will be making a second license purchase this evening. Maybe Fred will extend my thanks to his contributors (buy them a beer or something) when and if they ever meet.

Paying for upgrades
I now have VB3.0,VB4.0,VB5.0,VB6.0 and VB .net
A program written in VB3.0 does not run in VB.net. This means that Microsoft have at least five applications called Visual Basic so whenever claims are made that visual basic supports this or that they have to mention the version they are using or it is a lie.
They also seem to be going down the road of professional, enterprise etc more versions to keep track off(and pay for).
Pure Basic is just that Pure Basic. Youve bought it then you are compatible.
But Microsoft freaks shouldn't worry to much as given Microsoft's aggressive policy towards third party software developers, when Pure Basic gets just a little more widespread Microsoft will buy it out or at least try.

I think another important point would be that Fred should tell us if he runs out of money, I mean donating some money is one thing but donating money because you know the project needs it to survive is a different thing. I haven't donated yet but if Fred says he runs out of money or he needs some extra money to get an Intel Mac so that he can port PB to it. I would definitely donate money.
That would be like a donating for a new challenge. The same point would be if Fred decides he needs a Dual core processor to improve Threading or a new Graphics Card to imrpove Ogre or even if he says he needs more coffee I would like it more to help out knowing what he needs the money for.

Without reading the full thread now... this has been discussed some times ago before 4.0 was released.
PB is definitly to cheap! A normal dll, lets say just for skinning windows, is MUCH MORE expencive.
The Registration should be changed, in my opinion.
Maybe the PB Team should think about two product categories.
1.) One with all Updates to the new version (lets say you bought 4.0 all updates to 5.0 are included)
2.) one product which only coast a low fee but does not include any more updates (even bugfixes)
All registred users now should be able to get updates for free in the future, but new registres users should pay.
