How can anyone live in Norway?

I live in Sweden, work in Denmark but travel a lot. The last two month I've been working in Norway - a very beautiful country with lot of mountains and lot of snow (I can understand Slartibartfast when says he is proud of the Norwegian fjords).

It's stunning when you fly over Norway in the bright winter sun, you travel over a landscape you can't see anywhere on this earth.

BUT, what have happen with the Norweigan economy? The country is expensive, really expensive!!

Some examples;

* A pizza costs about $16 - $24
* A large beer about $11
* A pack of cigg $12 (on hotels $16)
* A cab 6 km about $38

In Sweden the same prices are;

* A pizza between $3 - $6
* A large beer $4
* A pack of cigg $5
* A cab 6 km $15

In Denmark;

* A pizza $12
* A LARGE beer $4
* A pack of cigg $5
* A cab 6 km $17

What is this all about? WHY is Norway so expensive!?!?

First of all, your dk prices depends on where you are. I was at a heaven for party people and i paid 14$ for a large beer In london you pay around 3$ for a pint.

However normally in denmark alcohol and cig's are much cheaper than norway. The pizza's, well it depends. But denmark normally have foreigners working there so its cheap (though i would put that price up to 23$ if you need a LARGE pizza. for 3-4 people then)


NOW! Go look at what a CAR COSTS IN DENMARK!!!
In denmark you can take a car price, divide it with 3 and you got the price in germany (and norway is too cheaper. much, afaik). So its not all stuff thats cheaper..

But things like beer and pizza's are definently cheaper


Power is cheaper in norway too. I was in norway at my ski'ing vacation and i did notice that restaurents etc was rather expensive, but my parents paid so what the heck

I had allways wonder why my Danish working partners drove around in so crappy cars?!?

Okey, my Denmark prices are from Copenhagen and the Norwiegian are from Bergen, not from Oslo.

Some places its cheap, but some places its much more expensive.


(Yeah now you know why they drive around in crappy cars though my family got a brand new 4x4 and a normal passenger car, but thats just because we are lucky having enough money heh.. many cant even afford a car thats too bad )

Yeah - the Danish car tax is really strange... but I'll guess you can earn some bucks if you buy the car in Denmark and import it to Sweden, for example.

Because people can't live in such an expensive country with low wages, and when they earn a lot, then the companies will need to get the money from somewhere, and that is you. And then you'll need to earn more to buy food and stuff, and then hell is loose.

There are similar places, like here in northern coastal British Columbia where I live - in a former Norweigan colony. The prices around here are also similar to the prices you posted for Norway. Must be inexpensive to visit Sweden?

Maybe some Health Departament decision to hel you: stop smoking, stop driniking bear, don't eat more pizza and walk 6 km!!

A big pizza in Bergen cost actually 30$.
Cars are even more expensive here in Norway then Denmark, look here:
VW Golf GTi DSG costs 400 000 NOK, ca 60 000 $.

But the average net income is very high in Norway

Best way to define costs might be to use time.

Eg, how many hours does the average wage-earner have to work in order to by something.

Loaf of Bread = how many minutes
Certain car = how many years

Etc.

Makes it all relative and maybe some high income countries won't look so good. But they probably will.
