dep - data execution protection

Post by blueznl »

it's supposed to help protect your computer, but i've noticed it may cause several (self modifying?) programs to crash...

do you use it? and did it affect pb programs or not?

I had it on but now try it without for a period. I do not have it build into the CPU (only INTEL) but using the DEP-fuction of win xp pro (sp2). But now sometimes have my win xp locking up (most times with FireFox after 30 min of active [heavy] browsing, 100% usage total machine lock-up).

No problems with PB other than a 'locked up" IDE sometimes (one or twice both with 3.94 and the new 4.0 beta1). Not with programs made with PB.

Anybody else has the same problem?

Where do you turn it off? I have XP too and my PC gets so slow all the time
too, so it'd be interesting to see what happens here if I turn it off too. All I
see under "My Computer" are two options to turn it on, but nothing for off.
I compile using 5.31 (x86) on Win 7 Ultimate (64-bit).

@PB,
Well YOU are right! But select the top one thats only for windows programs and services. Since NO windows program uses "self modifying code" thats almost like "off".

pardon my french.... :P

NO they DO not if they do than DEP prevents it!! Thats why!! You "Fool" :lol: :P (could not resist sorry...)

[edit]
And if there ARE windows programs which does use SMC (Self Modifying Code) show me which ones?? MicroSoft had them all removed from WIN XP SP2, because of DEP...
