Pure Basic "hidden" functions ... and drawbacks

Everything else that doesn't fall into one of the other PB categories.

Pure Basic can do much more than I thought at first glance :

App. development :
- Straightforward to most Win API function,
- Call DLL,
All you need is to buy one of the MicroSoft book about Visual C
programming ( this will give you access to a lot of documentation
if nothing else ... ), and dive in !

Games development :
- Download the ( free ) DirectX SDK from MS + Direct Music SDK

If you're using MS WIN you're all set for less than $100,
( Dunno about Linux or Amiga though ... )

I think the real bottleneck lies in the fact that Fred needs/wants
to support MS WIN + Linux + Amiga which turns into a reduced set of
features common to all platforms ... ( DON'T FLAME I AM NOT ADVOCATING
DROPPING EITHER LINUX OR AMIGA, just trying to find an explanation ... )

For me as an aspiring programmer the only downside of PB is the documentation,
which is not always up to date and detailed enough for me ( I discovered many
things looking at the snippets on the PB ressource center, but I -and my
girlfriend- would rather be able to read from a book in my bed ), but I wonder
how Fred could do that alone ... Maybe with a little help from his friends
(count me as one if French to English translation is needed ).

You're right, I'm trying to support three OS (Amiga, Windows and Linux) but I never take a limitation for an OS if a good functionnality is needed. For example, the ListIconGadget and TreeViewGadget doesn't exists AS-IS on Amiga, but it's on Windows and Linux version. Systray support is only for Windows (other OSes haven't such feature). The only master word for me is keeping things EASY.

About your help, thanks a lot, just contact me directly by e-mail we will see what can be done together for the french translation :).. Almost 90% of the doc is already translated BTW.

For the documentation, may be I should put it on a free Web site (CVS ?) and everyone (with authorized access tough) could improve it/fix it. Just a tough.

The Pure Basic Basement, a soon-to-be opened site will have full documentation on-line and a commenting user-interactive system similar to PHP.NET.

I'm hoping this will help allow users to get their knowledge, opinions, tricks, and tips into the documentation on a COMMAND LEVEL - to help others as well as help Fred.

Look for it soon.
