What's with the yellow?

Post by Mistrel »

Why is PB's background theme in everything a pale yellow? It's in the IDE, it's in the debugger, and it's in the help file.

I think it's a very unusual color.

Yellow is supposed to be good for the eyes. The more amber/brown it is though the better. In the "old" days, most of the expensive monitors had amber screens.

I don't think that this is the reason they chose that shade of yellow though, it may possibly be too bright to be that good for you.

I have gotten so used to the yellow color scheme in Japbe that I find it hard to code in any other color schemes, such as a white BG.

I don't have a problem coding with it as a background (as long as its pale). From color theory, bright yellow causes frequent irritability and excitement (of the anger variety) in a person. A white or black background on the other hand would probably have too much constrast which would strain the eyes.

Personally I think a green or blue shade would work the best, but I have fallen in love with the pale yellow of my current editors of choice. I thought it was an unusual color too when I first saw it.

Because Fred chose it and he's the author and obviously likes it?
If he made it black or white, someone else would say those colors
are unusual too. You can't please everyone all the time.

One man's junk is another man's treasure. Just change the color in the prefs
then. Personally, my IDE's background is black, to save my eyes during long
coding sessions. It's all configurable, so go nuts and make it the way you like.

This was my first thought too. I haven't tried to do anything about the helpfile but yellow is gone from everywhere else. not a trace now :)

Indeed, my second computer was called "Laser 700". The monitor it came with was a Zenith from 1984 (4 years older than me hehe) and it only had 2 colors: a combination between yellow and orange and none  . However it didn't hurt my eyes. In fact I loved it :).

After trying many different color schemes over several years I find that the yellow is easy on the eyes and the default colors used in the native IDE are as good as any. But no default color scheme is going to suit everyone, that's for sure. I'm actually surprised that any shade of yellow is usable for an IDE, but somehow Fred's found one!

I read a while back that you could easily reduce eye strain while working on computers by adjusting the colors so that the background was a pale yellow instead of bright white.

I tried it and found it worked so well, that pale yellow is now my default background color for Windows itself and any program that doesn't use it, I adjust so that it does.

If you don't like Fred's yellow background, try using the IDE's preferences and change it to what you do like.
