Thanks but there's nothing unusual going on here, the civil emergency alerts and warnings we had were as usual, over blown.
Slept through the east cape quake in the morning and the tsunami from the kermadec quakes was only a very small surge. USGS data said 0.3 to 1m while NZ muppets said 1m to 3m

Well at least that gave me an excuse to sit on the deckchair and enjoy a beer waiting for the waves to come.

Happy to hear that. And great to know that you have such emergency contingencies in place. Always better safe than sorry.

Still, it's never a bad time to kick back on that deckchair and have a cold one.

Guys, Idle has obviously been compromised! We need to retaliate quickly, while we still have the element of surprise!

Haha Idle, time works for us. Then it's summer here and I'm lying at the sailboat with a cold beer.
Then I think of you and how the weather is just at your place
sorry for my bad english

I had experienced it once as a child.
It is absolutelly fascinating to see.
The water goes far far back, then a white line comes.
You can see it coming, but you can't estimate how high it is yet.
If you don't run then, there is not much time left until you know how high it is.
If the water does not go far back, not much comes.
Typically, the locals run and the tourists stop and look and do not understand what the locals want to tell them.

So, my wife (before she was my wife) was in a cinema. The guy behind her kicked the back of her seat. She ignored him. Five minutes later, he did it again. She ignored him. Another five, he did it again - she stood up and slapped his face. Moments later the cinema roof started to cave in - it was an earthquake! If I had been the guy that would be a romantic end to the story but we met a few years later :D

If it sounds simple, you have not grasped the complexity.

josh, It won't be long before it's getting colder but it's true about the weather here, you can often get 4 seasons in a day. usually while your sailing along in a 15kts breeze and next minute your knocked down in a 45 kt squall and it's 10 degrees cooler.

saki: you don't want to hang around to find out how big it is.
I heard a story of my friend who survived a tsunami he heard all his workers screaming as they ran for the hills, he ended up kicking in the ceiling and clinging onto the rafters of the house he was building.

@Idle
I was one of the tourists, the sea was always far away.
You look stupid and do not know what is going on there.
Then you don't understand why everyone screams, says something about earthquakes and runs,
although there is no sea at all and no earthquake can be felt.

a bit like some places on the north sea, tide literally floods in it's so flat.

I image so but one doesn't expect to get overtaken by the tide when it's coming in.

The problem is the very cold water and currents that prevent you from reaching the land.

Here in the video two men want to try to return to the land with the use of the flood.
One walks like a walker, the other hurries.
In the end, both would have drowned.
