Reminds me of 'simpler' days

But i started big!

My first computer, and my first programming was in this:



ZX SPECTRUM 48K +

Yup!

Reminds me of the good old days back in the early 80s with my first computer, an Apple ][ with two disk drives and 64K of memory.

Man did I have some fun with that computer!

I had a spectrum, a beeb and, the best of all for coding fun, a Sinclair QL... now that was a machine and a great OS.

Mind you, the damn thing blew up on me after a couple of years.

We had an Altair that we built from the kit... picked up in New Mexico personally... Then a MUCH smaller ZX-80 by sinclair... then an Atari 800XL with 48k!!! I took that to college in 1983 and wrote my papers on it in Volkswriter!!!





Never could type on the Sinclair... $200.00 back then was still a lot of money! I bought my first car (the Pinto) for $300.00

We popped that thing up to 16K eventually... The tapes would not load after 4-5 loads but you could rewrite!

I've built several of those and some others that came as kits for friends who either didn't have the skills or the time to build them.

I still have a C64, C16, Apple IIc and TI 99/4A.

However something i want to do is write a game for a old console, maybe the PC-Engine (called TurboGrafx 16 in the USA). If i only had the time.

For the PC I just kept upgrading rather than buying a whole new PC though some of the upgrades were pretty close to a whole new PC.

Only the 486s were Intel based, when I upgraded to a Pentium class machine I went with AMD's K5 CPU and have used AMD CPUs ever since.

For graphics I started off with Trident based cards, my first 3D accelerator was nVidia's Riva TNT 128. Around 2000 I tried an ATi All in Wonder Pro Radeon card which was a total disaster because the drivers were so unstable the PC was unusable. Went back to an nVidia GeForce 256 and have used nVidia based graphic cards ever since.

Actualy there are some very nice RPGs on the PC-Engine but most of them are jap only.

I think it's the most awesome game console ever build. By todays standards its outdated but back then it was a unbelievable.
Not long ago i showed a friend some shooters on my jap PC-Engine. It just blew his mind playing R-Type that just looked the same as on the arcade and not having any slowdowns. And as i told him that the CPU is actualy only a 8bit CPU he dont believed it. ^^

On a funny sidenote - we are back at the epic ZX Spectrum vs C64 wars in 2019

But in 2019 it is ZX Spectrum Next vs the Commander X16

Where's your C64?! Unacceptable upgrade path!



EDIT: Incidentally I went: C64 > C16 > CASIO PB100 > Many C64s > Amiga 500 > 8086 PC/XT > Amiga 600 > C64 > PC (and I still have a C64).

Actually, come to think of it, I did own a C16 and C128 for a short while, this must have been around the Amiga 500 era.

I already owned an A500, can't even recall why I had a C16 and C128 for a while, but I actually did. Then again, that's not a *real* C64, I admit

"GO64"!

EDIT: The C128 was actually a pretty interesting machine in a way. I haven't had much to do with one, but as far as I can work out, it's possible to have dual monitor output on it... one 40 column VIC-II screen and one 80 column VDC screen... which is pretty funky. Both seperately addressable of course. And I recently found out that its actually the Z80 in the machine that handles the bootstrapping. All in all, the C128 is an odd beast, but I feel I should investigate it further.
