A version of Elite that even works on Vista

Post by Derek »

I just found a link to a version of Elite, the space game, that even works on my Vista powered laptop, looks good as well.

Brings back memories of playing the Amiga version.

Anyway, it's here if anyone wants it.

Thanks for the link! I'll have to try that out.

I remember playing the Apple II version for countless hours, even with its age, it is still one of if not the best game I've ever played. It would be really nice to see the same game re-made exactly as it was back then but with modern graphics and sound...

Here are some more Elite links:

Ian Bell's (co-author) Elite home page: He has a large archive of Elite related files including emulable versions for most platforms.

Enjoy!

I have tried a few of the downloads from Ian Bell's site but they never seem to quite work right, I was hopeful that the BBC version would work but no. :(

Thanks for the other link, Ill have a look. :)

If you like MMOs it definitely looks interesting.

I got turned off on MMOs by people using cheats.

I'll never understand why people do that, you can't really feel any satisfaction or sense of accomplishment in your standing or ranking becuase you know you cheated to get there and didn't really earn it.

And it ruins the game for everyone else.

Where's the fun in that?

I will use those but only if there's no other way to win.

When I do use them I prefer cheats like full health and or full ammo instead of cheats like god mode. God mode just take away the challenge.

Beating a game is a lot more satifying to me if I don't have to resort to cheats.

Also:

If any of you liked the Frontier sequels to Elite (I didn't) the other author of Elite (David Braben) as a web site where you can find both Frontier: Elite II and Frontier: First Encounter as shareware.

I didn't mind Frontier, had a lot more depth to it. Will have a look at the site, thanks.

thanks for the MMO link... perhaps I will try it soon..

I knew about Frontier - have it runnging here on a win95 P100 with DOS-bootdisk.
needed a super-slim mouse-driver to get enough low-mem.

if you need it, I can look up where I got it from...
oh... and have a nice day.

I tried the downloads but I don't want to be messing around with dos mode games, always seems like too much trouble, probably isn't but that's just me.

The thing with the Elite rewrite is that it just works straight off.

if you don't have an old machine with DOS or Win95 on it,
you can install the DOS_Box on your actual machine to easily play DOS-games.

I think, Frontier is really worth a look.
It has a wonderful big "map", such was never done again
(except in First Encounters, but there the grafic of the interface was crap.)

when I first played "Freelancer", I was bloody disappointed with the small areas and the static planets...
oh... and have a nice day.

Thanks, Kaeru, nice tip about DOSbox.

Just installed it and ran Frontier, haven't seen that screen for years.

Now I just have to remember how to play the game.

iirc on David Braben's site are a lot of downloads...
there should be a textfile or such with the control keys...

I downloaded some doc when I installed Frontier three years ago...
oh... and have a nice day.
