Not that anyone will be particularly bothered at PureB but it appears that powerbasic.com is now PowerBasic.Gone

Mind you taking all things into account PureB always looked the better product and more important maintained.

PowerBasic.com is working fine:

https://downforeveryoneorjustme.com/powerbasic.com

The site loads for me, too.

http://www.powerbasic.com is reporting that the connection has been reset during loading.
https://www.powerbasic.com is reporting that a secured connection failed.
But the forums (https://forum.powerbasic.com/forum) are working quite fine.

The source code was bought by one of its main former customers (DrakeSoftware) one year ago, to ensure the continuity of its internal developments.
It seems that finally they will not release new versions but will continue to provide the product to already registered users.
(But maybe it's changed again since then ?)

Even though I have never used it (although I have followed their news from time to time), and I consider PureBasic much more powerful, it is always sad to see a product stop. Competition or rather the sharing of ideas and passions in the same field is always a good emulation and a benefit for all.
For those who may not know: Bob is the inventor of TurboBasic (1987) then taken over and abandoned by Borland, then bought by Bob Zale who continued under the name of PowerBasic.

Forums still alive https://forum.powerbasic.com (This is a new forum, without olds posts)

PS. Even if we could not agree with the way the author (Bob) had to manage his forum and his users, let's still have a thought for his wife (Vivian)

I really don't see the point to announce a competitor website failure. Is there an official announcement somewhere ?

Both URLs work totally fine for me. Nothing down; the product is for sale; etc. All systems go. Is the OP just spam (only 6 posts)?

Neither work for me either through wi-fi or 4G.

Very odd.

FYI: next time you can check with a site like this one
http://www.isitdownrightnow.com/

It seems this started more than a month ago
https://forum.powerbasic.com/forum/cv/7 ... bsite-down

I tried myself from various shells

Worked
Code:
usa
switzerland
japan

Didn't work
Code:
netherlands
romania
italy
germany
france

About PowerBasic itself: no, officially it's not dead, the current owner expressed his view about its future here

Sounds scary, rewriting the compiler in a different language. Also keep in mind last update was already seven years ago. Good luck to them.

even the PB Compiler Book

i wonder why they reverted back to version 10.03 from 10.04 ??

i didn't notice any Bugs or problems with v10.04

Yup, contrasting PureBasic's timeline seems like tortoise vs the hare. So glad I'm not on that slow train.

Yep, there was an article by Joel Spolsky about why re-writing code from scratch is a terrible idea:

https://www.joelonsoftware.com/2000/04/ ... do-part-i/

Hopefully the PowerBasic developer has read it.

@Fred, apologies for all of the below, but I am only trying to clear up the confusion for folks.

Here is the issue...

If you are in the EU, the links to the PowerB site will not work for you, only the forum links will work. For those of us in the USA with commercial sites, sadly, the easiest way to comply with the new draconian EU GDPR regulations that they are threatening us with is to simply block all EU IPs. Since most of us do not maintain a staff of lawyers familiar with the intricacies of EU law, this really is the safest option.

Personally, I have not decided how I will handle it for my site(s). As long as my site is hosted in the USA, there is no way I will ever comply with any EU regulation even if my customers may reside in the EU. However, I may soon be moving to a EU based host, so I am not sure what to do, but, I only want to block EU IPs as a last resort.

The ^above^ are 100% my comments and mine alone and are in no way a reflection on PowerBASIC or its new owner (who is a great guy).

The official posts by Adam Drake on the PowerB forum regarding this topic are below:

8 Jun 2018, 09:16 PM
I must apologize for a delayed reply on this one and no real information available to you all yet here on the forum. The day the website stopped working in some parts of the world I have determined that we have had to temporarily go dark in the EU while we examine the ramifications of GDPR and how it affects sales, etc. (the web team didn't inform me immediately of what was happening). Our attorneys currently believe the forum itself is not a problem to leave as is - but our web team and attorneys here have made the determination that it is prudent to take this step for the moment. I do apologize for any inconvenience this is causing, I hope you understand it is just unfortunately necessary.

This decision was outside the scope of my control and authority to make, I am attempting to expedite the decision making process. I truly am sorry for the headache.

I can't be specific as I do not have the info in front of me, but there was one minor graphics related bug with the 10.04 compiler. But there was an easy workaround. That was the only new bug to 10.04 and AFAIK had nothing to do with why the update was pulled. The update is still available here. Please note, only the link for PBWin 10.04 works, the PBCC 6.04 link is broken and is unavailable.

The IDE itself still has bugs that have been there for many versions, but those were never fixed because every time somebody would report the bugs, Bob would ban them. The bugs are most likely in the compiler as the same bugs are present in a lot of the software people write with PB.

On a hilarious sidenote - even lawyer websites have been disabled for this very same reason. It clearly shows how terrible some laws are made, as i had to walk to my lawyer and ask in person about their office times because their website had been (temporarily) disabled due to this.

The issue here is making a site GPRD compliant is not an easy task, and while the law was in the work 2 years ago they only voted it 2 months ago very quickly, taking everybody by surprise. It should have come with a grace period or something.
