I would like to know the state of the purebasic linux version. Is it still supported?

There are bugs and incompatibilities in so many places, i have reported many of them months ago but they wherent fixed in any beta, RC and not even the final version. The "official" timeframe for the 'fixed' 4.61 version is running out and in all the months, it seems there where just a few hours invested in some easy to fix linux problems.

I dont think these problems are "unnoticed", because reactions to linux problems happen as long as they dont involve time to fix them or also affect the windows version. If there is no active maintenance for the linux version anymore due to the low interest, lack of time and limited number of users, then maybe it would be fair to release the sources of buggy system libs so the linux users can fix them themself? Or get one or two of the communities more advanced users to supply fixes for the linux version?

Valid questions and ones echoed by many of us. I specifically started using PB again solely for the Linux version. Unfortunately, it appears I might have made a serious error in judgment.

I hope the Linux version is continued and maintained in the future. I have chosen PureBasic because of the ability to compile for Linux and MacOS, too.

I'm currently developing a huge part of a big commercial product using PureBasic. And some parts are currently ported to Linux, other are in progress, and I will do the same for MacOS, too. Discontinuing PB for Linux will be a huge problem for me!

Please, please, continue professional support for PureBasic. Even if I have to pay again for each new version of for each operating system.

In the Linux world we have a lot of change in the past few months, moving from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3, from GTK 2 to GTK 3, from Gnome-Panel to Gnome-Shell and so on. A lot of change, generate some strange behaviours.
Just for exemple, using XML command in LinuxMint 12 (Gnome 3 + Gnome-Shell) seem to generate a FontConfig error it is a bug, it is an internal problem in Gnome 3, I don't know.

And more important, beside Fred and Freak, who develop PureBasic ? I guess no body else. Heaven if Fred and Freak are very good programmers, PureBasic it's a lot of work for only two guys.

I think, one thing happened that has been a direct result of some fundamental problems. I allready stated my thoughts in July 2008:

Now, obviously my first point was hit and Fred needed an additional job (http://www.purebasic.fr/blog/?p=381):
And all the other things that I mentioned in that post are no longer possible (IMHO).

It seems, that Fred is a genius in programming, but not so genius in marketing (this is no criticism). I hope that he will continue development in an acceptable manner (and the blog entry states so).

But I understand the first question of Ramihyn_ in this thread, because I started some Linux porting a few days ago and upon now I posted 6 Linux related bugs I found. The PB developers themselves obviously do not use PB on Linux very much. I hope that all Linux developers are reporting their problems and tips and tricks - and PB continues to get the best programming language choice for desktop and server programming someone can take.

PS. I wonder why no company offered Fred a part time job where he can continue PB development on a payed basis? If my company would be just big enough, I would do...

I, too, chose PB primarily for its cross-platform capability. Although I have yet to take advantage of it, it will be a big role of staying with PB long term.

However, your point about more users = more money is not really accurate...the way Fred has set it up is that only more NEW users = more money. Sure, a one-time license fee is nice for kids and poor folks, it is not conducive to paying for new development. Unless current users voluntarily donate money on a consistent basis, Fred will never have enough revenue from PB to quit his "real" job. And the discontent with the current development timelines may not attract new users; they may as well use FreeBasic or RealBasic, even if they are not quite as good.
